I have the privilage of getting my daughter this Christmas Holiday. I plan on taking her on her first ice fishing outing. She's fifteen and easily bored. Has anyone got any ideas of the best place I can take her to catch a few in the Cache Valley / Montpelier area? Size does not matter, I just don't want to get skunked or she will never go ice fishing again. You know the teenage girl thing.
Thanks for any information! I'll be practicing every day until then!

Sorry I don't know anywhere near there. But remember to make sure she's warm. If you even get a slight chill, she's probably freezing. Take plenty of extra clothing and do your best to make sure she's warm, cause if she freezes she'll hate ice fishing worse than if she doesn't catch anything.

I'll second what Hoobie has to say about being warm. It will make the difference. I really don't know any great places up there that you will be puttin' the hurt on them. If you want to drive a little, hit Rockport or Lost Creek. I'm sure she could catch fish there.

Lets be real here. Many 15 yr old girls don't like fishing. Open water or ice. They may not mind catching, but fishing is boring for them.
Don't make the whole day be about fishing, go out to breakfast at a Denny's or something, get her a card with some new downloads for her Ipod or a new CD to listen to on the ice. Bring hot chocolate in a thermos. Don't forget chairs and a spare blanket for a wrap.
Places to go near Cashe? I'd hit Mantua, should be lots of action by christmas. Should be easy to see the crowd and know where to go. Should be. Be sure to stop at the campground store. It is known for it's selection of candy.
When she says it's boring and time to go, pack up and go, remember the day is about her, not you going fishing.

I second what others said about the warm clothes, but feet are the most important and usually the first to get uncomfortable. Make sure her feet are warm. When I take my little 7 year old out I buy some of those chemical heaters they make them to fit into gloves and some have a sticky side and are thinner and are designed to stick under your toes. Definately worth the buck and a half. As for where to fish, I've never fished hyrum or Mantuna through the ice, but perch are always the target when I take my little girl, if you can find a good school the catching can be nonstop. Caleigh and I go to rockport and about all I do is bait hooks, she does all the reeling.
It would be wise to do a little prescouting and try to find some structure or depth that holds fish, so hopefully you can go right out there and find them.

Don, take her to Hyrum..the ice is safe by the dam and you should get into some perch. If you can get to the other side (across from the campground) you will do well, but be patient. Also, make sure your daughter has GOOD boots! If she gets bored then take her into town and go to Gossners cheese factory..my kids love it!!
