Bear Lake Report ... Day Before Christmas
#1

FishingWaters invited me to join him on Bear Lake today. I had to decide between mall hopping one last time or fishing the big blue. Hummm, let me think. So we agreed on a half day up there to see what we could scare up.

FW, along with his son Tyson and his friend Trent, picked me up at 4:45 this morning and off we went. The weather report was for a good day and boy, how right that report was. No wind, no clouds, no fog, just plenty of mild warm sun.

We launched at around 7:00 and decided to go check out the new piles. Very few marks and very small at that so we headed over to the old rock pile. There we marked lots of fish suspended between 45 – 60 feet. Found a good stack and anchored up. We never left that spot all day.

Paul (Fishing Waters) boated the first fish of the day … a nice big fat white. Man, It never ceases to amaze me how big of lure those whites will go after. FW was using a 6-7 inch fat tube when he hooked that white.

I caught a 2.5 mack (which I kept and already cooked for my supper tonight). Then FW boated a small cut and then he boated this nice 7.5 lb. 30 inch mack. He looked to be pretty old.

Son Tyson boated this very nice 3.5 lb cut. It made his new ugly stick do an awful ugly bendo too.

So Tyson and I each boated one fish, Trent had to settle for the cold stick today, and FW had the hot stick bringing in three different species.

We weren’t the only ones on the lake this day before Christmas. There were 4-5 other boats. But I think our boat did the best as far as I could tell. We got off the lake at noon. It made for a short but fun day on ole Big Blue.

On our way home through the canyon, we seen lots of snowmobillers having fun. Many of their families had picknic tables out with food and family enjoying the great weather. Does my heart good to see folks out doors on such a nice day before Christmas.

Mery Christsmas to all you good fishing friends.

Old Coot! I should have come over and said hello! I did not know that was you. We were the fourth boat to come out to the rock pile this morning. (4 guys in a small tin tub, launched off GR point). Lucky for you I left Kaysville at 2:30 am this morning and after picking my cousin in Sandy and then going to Logan to get the boat, we found out that the hubs needed to be re-packed on the boat trailor before we could make it up the canyon. We had two jacks and got them done before 7. That is why we got there late. You were within 10-15 feet of one of my favorite spots on the lake or I should say, possibly one of your spots as well! We tried in shallower and only caught 1 whitey on a big tube as well. You were the only ones catching fish on the pile and we did not want to crowd so we loaded up and tried the new piles and caught a few average cutts and another whitey. Glad to hear that you had some success and hopefully will get to meet you next time. Merry Christmas to all, Jake

Thanks for coming along and let us rescue you from shopping. Thanks for making the post about our trip I got home unloaded the boat printed the pictures, changed and headed to Salt Lake with the family. I wish you would have been able to hook up a few more fish in the front of the boat. My boy still has a Smile on his face from catching that fish or maybe it because it’s Christmas, I printed the picture out last night to for him to show his grandparents when I gave it to him he stared at it for 5 to 10 minutes. I don’t think it was too hard on him to put it back. I appreciated your skills on helping my boy and I land some nice fish.

I guess I better get some bigger BFT stickers for my boat. We looked on you boat for some and called out on the radio for anybody from BFT. When you were to the north of us did you mark any fish? We didn’t really start catching them until around 10:00 it just took some time and skill to hookup.

Nice report Coot! After our windswept miserable day, I couldn't coax my son or my wife to go with me so I stayed home and wished I was there. We did see a couple of Bald Eagles just having a ball around the marina and that was exciting as it was the first time my son or wife saw one. We'll have to hook up and go when BC is in the middle of one of his crazy work schedules and we have time off. And we'll especially have to go when all three of us have time off.

FW, we hardly marked any fish at all. We probably only saw two or three the whole day. We also tried off the rocks at the marina for a straggler whitey with no luck. I forgot my radio again, I was wishing that I had it when we wern't catching fish. Live and lean. Best of luck, Merry Christmas Jake

Nice report Ralph, looks like some great weather, I hope it holds one more week. Did you have any problems with ice as you put the boat on the water?

No problems with ice at all. Smooth sailing. In fact, once in the marina, I had to look around to see if I could find some ice. Then I seen some over around the slips. But other than that it was wide open all the way to the lake. However, because of the ice on the ramp from boats coming up, we had to back the truck's back weels all the way into the water to get a slight run at the ramp.

I would not be surprised at all if we had open boat fishing all year long this year up there. But then again, ya never know.

[cool]Nice report, guys. What a great day out on the big blue pond up North! Gotta get out on that lake next year when I have a good motor on my tiny boat to get me safely off it if a big "w" comes up. Good luck on your next outing up there. Hope you get into one of the big ones!

It sure is surprising what one week of warm weather will do to a frozen marina. When I heard BaitCaster and then you and Fishingwaters made a trip up this last week I was thinking the same thing. Depending on how cold the temps get over the next couple of weeks, I would doubt we will have any ice for the cisco run. As you know the key is low temps and no wind, I guess time will tell.
