Fish Lake Ice
#1
Anyone hear about ice conditions on Fish Lake?

Reports from the DWR say that it may be unsafe, but they can be a week or two behind this time of year even if it indicates that it is a recent report.

It is usually frozen around Christmas time. In spite of recent warm temperatures, I would think that the cold spell should have built up some solid ice by now at that elevation.

Thanks!

[cool]Welcome to BFT/Utah's board, BackcountryUtah. Coldfooter fished it a couple of weeks ago on 2.5 inches of ice. Very high pucker factor. If you go back about 5 pages you should find his thread on it. I think it was called "Fishlake major pukerfactor" or something like that.

You are definitely right about the DWR's board/reports being about 2-3 weeks behind. They are probably still saying Strawberry has thin ice and is unsafe, LOL! Stick to this board for your up to date reports, and you'll be a lot better informed. Good luck!

last reports I heard was that Fishlake had about 50% ice. That is typical for this time of year. You should be able to fish the north and south ends of the lake, but don't expect to be able to go anywhere you want (be cautious if you take an ATV). The warm weather most definately is a factor, as well as the wind. It might be another week before the entire lake has safe ice.

Just got off the phone with Fish Lake Resorts. They said that about 50% of the lake has ice, as pbh mentioned, and on the north and south ends. The voice on the phone, however, said that this is the latest he's seen it this ice-free. We're down there in a month so we shall see!!

[#0000ff]I talked to a guy up at Jordanelle on Saturday, who had been by Fish Lake a couple of days before. He said about the same as you have already been told. The ends are frozen and fishable but still lots of open water.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]He also said he stopped by Otter Creek and there is about 5" of ice there. Saw some nice rainbows being iced.[/#0000ff]

I've seen the lake with mucho open water over New Year's. It's common for the lake to still have open water until just after the New Year. However, for the past 25 years, I have never NOT been able to fish the lake through the ice over New Year's...

On the Dec. 14th we fished the south end. about 100 yards from south shore the ice was 2" thick. 99% of the lake was still open at that time..

Went up yesterday. PBH is right lots of open water. Probably more like 1/3 ice cover. Don't plan on it being any too soon before full ice cap. Wind was blowing like crazy and unless we get some really calm cold nights it may be awhile. Pelican Point isn't even safe ice yet, except right in the neck. Fished the south end and caught some where around 40 fish between two of us. It didn't seem to matter what was used as long as it was tipped with some thing. Caught one mack about 24" but it hadn't been able to put any weight on yet. Weren't too many people yet either, maybe 20. Ice was about 8" thick where we fished. Don't get too deep either. Fishing was best at around 25'. Fishing was good enough that we're going back this weekend.
