Pelican report
#1
Went to pelican today, saw a few BFT'ers on the north side but I thought I would take my chances on the South side. OK I lied ....I think my wife knows her never eat soggy waffles (N E S W) better than I do, meant togo to north side appearantly I need a compass.
Ice was good and solid in the morning, but in late afternoon trfishin, a rebel lone fisher like me lol, showed some stuff about the ice that's going to make me be a little more cautious next time. Open water in between the (where the ice lifts up like a mountain). looked like good ice but trfishin shoved his kabob hehe right through the ice with one poke. If we don't get some cold weather, be careful. As far as fishing goes I didn't really do that well in the morning, to stubborn to move once I found 'the spot'. But I can only take so much torture. Met up with trfishin and we found some fish, mostly bluegill, surprisingly tight to under ice reeds. Small jigs tipped-typical. I also hope everyone made it home safe. I left about 3:30 or so and hit awful snowstorm from Tabiona turnoff to bottom of Daniels canyon. Then heavy rain from there. Let me know how you north siders did.

[Smile]i met fsh4fun on the ice today. he and i caught some bluegills and a few small bass. as fsh4fun said the ice was solid this morning but got pretty soft this afternoon. we only found one place to get back over the pressure ridge this afternoon as the ice had shifted alot and there was some open water and alot of thin ice to far to jump across and possibly even for a board. i poked my ice bar through more than one place that looked like good solid ice, so becareful as falling in one time usually ruins ice fishing from then on to where a person will only fish in the summer and there is a lot of good fishing on the ice. good luck fishing and hope to see some more bft'ers on the ice sometime soon. thanks for all the reports from cbr and the others that helped me and alot of others to get out and enjoy some great fishing on pelican lake. thanks trfishin

[Smile]hey fsh4fun05 that ice bar is good for more than checking the ice and cutting a hole. i have used it to pry myself off of the seat[shocked] a time or two in the truck when i have gotten home from fighting nasty snow/ice packed roads before. thanks again trfishin

You should have ventured out to meet us on the North side. We absolutely demolished the fish over there. We caught so many huge gills and also hooked some very nice bass. BassAckwards had the hot stick this trip, he had 9 on the ice before any of us had even 1. Then FishingWaters caught up and iced loads of gills and some bass and I, caught up shortly. Bassrods found a sweet spot to hook into bass regularly landing several nice green fish through the ice, and his grandkids also joined and hooked some very nice gills. Here are some photos from the outing. Don't mind the scowl of BassAckwards, when he looks pissed he is really smiling. Smile

I took a photo of FishingWaters and some nice fish he caught but my camera battery got cold and it didn't save. I did snap one with his camera, I hope he posts it.

Good morning CBR I have a dumb question when you say the north side just exactly where to you mean. Is that by the boat ramp?

It is opposite from the boat ramp. When you turn South down the road that goes to the boat ramp about paralell from the big pump north of Pelican there is a road that turns east along the north side of the lake. You head east on this road and down before the pump is a dirt road that is marked as a DWR fishign access. You turn down this road heading south until you reach lake side.

thanks CBR the information is really helpful. How is the dirt road you take? Do you need chains to go down it? Thanks again for all your help.

It isn't too bad, there wasn't any snow so there was no problems, but if you are in a car and Pelican gets some snow it may be some work and chains may be a "must have". It is quite narrow and easy to miss but there is a small wood sign marking the road.

We had a good 10 inches of good clear ice. I took my 4 wheeler out on it...and did donuts...hauled the grandkids out on my sled. There was some open water where the geese and ducks had been keeping it open but otherwise the ice was solid and thick.

The ice was talking all day...and ice was forming in our holes. It's when the ice is silent...and you worry, not when she's popping and moaning. [Wink]

I'm thinking I might do the same, my daughters favorite fish is a bluegill. She was sure to make me feel guilty for not taking her. I owe her a fishin' trip. I guess i'll just have to go again, dang it!
