BERRY CAREFULL WITH MACHINES
#1
Guys I thought I'd post this under it's own topic. Polo is right, there is a huge ridge off Haws, though closer to Indian Creek. We had to skip the sleds across 2 feet of water (I'm sure there was ice underneath) to get back to the marina tonight. With a wheeler you can head tword the bathrooms and go up on the land but it was too rocky for me to ruin my tracks and I'd rather take my chances. It was froze solid this morning, but the temps were in the 50's today and it opened up. If you head tword Renegade DO NOT cut between the islands. It was open water this morning and got bigger on the way home (no ice underneath). Remember with the temps as high as they have been the last week things will be much different then last weekend. Please be carefull where ever you go. You can't write a report if you are dead.

That certainly gives you pause to think!
We were thinking about the Ladders and off to the island nearby or that general area.
Thanks for the heads up.

Glad you made it back alive. Your report is the first of someone driving across the lake. It could be a couple weeks before we get cold enough temperatures to harden the water up there.

Thanks for the information, I was taking my 4-wheeler tomorrow and going towards renegade but your post just changed my mind. I think I'll stay closer to the marina.

Your wheeler will be fine, just head straight out of the marina, hug the shore and it's a piece of cake. Just don't run the middle of the lake. Go over the top of the first mound by the old diversion damm and you'll be in Renegade in no time. There wasn't enough snow to take the machines that way or I'd have done it.

I thought I would check my email before I left and I'm glad I did. Thanks, for the info. Headed to Renegade.

Usually you run across a couple of ridges getting out of the marina, today I think we crossed 6! Only the one spot was spooky. Like Scott said, stay away from that little island, unless you want your machine to become "structure"!

Thanks for the info IFG. How deep was the snow on top of the ice? I'm thinking about taking my wheeler up there on Saturday and just wondering if there is little enough snow to get around alright.

[black]There was very little snow on the ice. Maybe 3". The sleds kept spinning out on the icy hard deck below because of the lack of snow. Your wheeler will go anywhere right now.[/black]

Does anyone have a basic map of which bay is which? I'm not real familiar with the back side of stawberry. I would like to take my wheeler out this weekend, but I need a little more visual to your description of the safe path to renegade.

Sportsmans and other sporting good stores sell a very nice map of the berry.

I know the spot you are talking about . I cruised in between those islands before and before I knew it I had open water on both side of me on my 4wheeler . I gave it a pucker factor of 10 and opted to go around the pressure ridge to the east on the way back . Remember when I posted that pic of that snowmobile that was pulled out of the water I took about 3 years ago . Same area . Thanks for the heads up .

It's 11 miles. Takes about 25 minutes, but it is the safer way to travel if you are worried.

How is it just straight across from the marina? I've seen a few sleds go all the way across the bay, but none were fishing. You can see a few ridges out there, but only personally seen the one right off the ramp/marina, etc.

It's plenty safe where the ice hits the boat ramp at the Renegade Marina. Once back there you should be just fine. There is some open water right where indian creek dumps in, but it is usually like that all year long. I don't recall any pressure ridges back there once you are past the island, so you should be able to go wherever you want without problems. I did see some people headed to the narrows, but I didn't get all the way over there.

I also was at the Berry on 12/28/2005 and found a few questionable spots. I went south from the marina and into the south entrance of the narrows. I crossed over seven ridges and one was very open (about three feet of open water). It got worse as the day went on. On my way back to the marina at the end of the day I had to pick the crossing very carefully so I did not sink the sled.

[unsure] Yes, Be very carefull, I my machine and I Fell through Yesturday. Do not cross the ice crack out from the marina. It's was really slushy and unsafe. We crossed it first this Thursday morning and were ok, But on our way back, around 3:00 We fell through.
Thanks to some BFT members they helped pull my machine out.
