Squid Fishing Anyone?

[black]Anyone interested in heading for Northern California and catching Humboldt Squid like the picture above? Right now the fishing for these is phenominal with anglers bringing in up to 20-30 squid a piece! That is a pile of calamari! Lee and Dixie Leavitt from Lee's Marine in Hyrum, went out last week and brought back 70 lbs of cleaned squid fillets. There are two fillets per squid and a fillet is as big as a large cookie sheet. [black]I just talked to Capt. Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sportsfishing Charters and he said the fishing is twice as good as the last couple of weeks and a trip down there would be some of the most exciting fishing you could experience. These squid average 50-60 lbs a piece! The charter cost is only $75 per person plus expenses. Anyone interested?[/black]

[cool][#0000ff]Did you get to see the size of the lures they use for those things...and how much they cost. You can go through a few of them since the beaks on those squid can bite right through wire line.[/#0000ff]

[black]The squid jigs are $25 a piece. They actually take two and use heavy split rings to connect them together. They start out fishing in about 700 ft of water and once one is hooked, the squid will actually follow to the surface to feed. Supposedly, once you get into them it's non-stop action. They squid can actually pull the split rings apart. There goes another $25! LOL![/black]

[black]What's funny is watching someone who has never caught a squid before. They use water for propulsion and if you bring them out of the water while they are still full, it's like having a five gallon bucket of water hit you if you're in the wrong place. Also the ink can be pretty messy.[/black]

You don't need no stinking calimari! Heck you can just go up to BL and catch a bunch of cisco, eat it raw, and pretend it is squid![Tongue] Sure looks like a lot of fun though.
