Just a hello...
#1
I've visited this forum a few times on the suggestion of Bluegillman. He and I frequent another website called the "Canoe Country Bulletin Board" which is devoted to discussing the fine points of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota (and the Quetico Provincial Park across the border in Ontario).

Anyhow, another point we have in common is fishing from float tubes, so he suggested I register here. So, I just did.

Not sure how faithfully I can contribute, but will try to offer up something useful or "entertaining" when I can. Things are sorta slow at the moment so maybe I can find something from my "archives". [Smile]

Guess I'll have to figure out how to post pics and such.

On a personal note... I live in Oregon, hence the screen name of "Orygoner". I see Zonker is in my neck of the woods. I'm a retired Forester...wife and I are definitely outdoor people. Interests too numerous to list...except for fishing of course.

Mostly I flyfish, but am not exactly a purist. In the right time and place I'd still sit on the bank waiting for an old carp to suck up a dough ball. [Tongue]

Looking to buy a new tube before I go off on a fishing trip to Kodiak Island this fall. I have two (both Caddis, a old donut and a u-boat - can't recall the models at the moment). But, I think I need one that gets my behind out of the water and is still light enough to pack into the backcountry lakes. I see lots of info on the board so I will be doing some homework. If you have suggestions, pls pass along.

Anyhow... I'll be checking in and try to contribute when I can. My thanks to Bluegillman for the tip.

[cool][#0000ff]Welcome aboard. Don't worry about having to post up a lot of hairy reports just to earn your keep. As long as you have some kind of interest in tubing or tooning you are welcome to hang out. Post up when you feel motivated and ask any questions you have. As you have probably observed, we have a pretty good gang on the board and we all try to help where we can.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Also, no apologies necessary if you are not a "purist". We do have some serious fly flingers on the board, but we don't throw rocks at them and they don't get too high and mighty on us. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I think most members have an appreciation for the art and science of fly fishing. I do. But, like yourself, I am a multi-tackle, multi-species kinda guy. I tie flies and have tought both fly tying and fly fishing, but I too have been known to soak a dough ball for carp. And catfish are some of my best friends.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You may not have had the time to check out all of the resources here, for researching a potential new craft. If you haven't already done so, bring up the "Best of the Best" post at the top of the page and look down through the topics. We try to keep up with new craft reviews and the questions folks have about different models. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We also have a separate "PICTURE BOARD" that you can access by clicking on "Float Tubing" at the top and then choosing "Pictures". Until you figure that out, here is a [url "http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gforum/gforum.cgi?forum=130;"]LINK TO PICTURE BOARD[/url]. There are pictorial shopping guides for both tubes and toons, as well as sonar and other goodies.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As you will read, in going back through some of our most recent posts, the Creek Company ODC 420 is currently one of the most popular tubes with many of our members. Your fellow Oregonian, Zonker, recently got one and likes it. [/#0000ff]

Hi Orygoner,

Good to have you aboard. As you mentioned, we already have something in common.

There are lots of good tubes and toons out there. After much deliberating, I decided on the ODC 420 and have been very pleased with it. You'll see it in some of my fishing pictorials. There are nicer boats out there, with more quality, but you can't beat this one for the price and functionality.

Looking forward to your posts whenever you have something to say.

BTW, Where are you located in our fair state?

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Zonker...in reply to your question... We live up the McKenzie River a little ways east of Springfield.

I used to fish the McKenzie a lot. In fact, I've been thinking about fishing the March Brown hatch soon if the water is right.

Maybe we'll have to go fishing sometime. I've lived somewhere along the McKenzie for the past 26 years. Used to live up at McKenzie Bridge...now down along Camp Creek Road.

I mostly fish the McKenzie from my drift boat. However, I got a Fish Cat pontoon last year that I plan to spend a little time in on the river.

It will be interesting to see how the March Brown hatch plays out this year - actually all the hatches - given the high water this winter...and more to come. The collective conventional wisdom is currently putting its money on reduced numbers of bugs. We'll see.

Hey there Orygoner,

Welcome!

Actually .... TubeDude is a Purist! He purely enjoys anything having to do with the subject of fishing and how to catch the critters. [cool]

Yeah, it will be interesting to see what pans out after the bottom scouring is over. I don't have a river worthy craft so most of my fishing has been downstream from Hayden Bridge. I've had some good days down there in March and April.

Hi Orygoner, did u find what you were looking for the trip? I know it is a long way before your trip, I'm just wondering.....

I am pretty well locked in on the ODC 420. Haven't put the cash on the counter yet, but I'm not in a hurry. I've got a $20 off cert from Cabela's. Have to check the local purchase option vs. mail order.

If you know of any deals out in internet land, holler. [Smile]

Thx for checking.

HEY THERE ORYGONER WELCOM ABOARD [Smile].
THE ODC 420 IS A VERY GOOD CHOICE, I'M VERY HAPPY WITH MINE, I MOVED UP FROM A TROUTS UNLIMITED TOGIAK WHICH I WAS NOT HAPPY WITH. ANYWAYS GOOD LUCK IN YOUR CHOICES AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU END UP WITH AND YOUR THOUGHTS.

How far did u say were going to be hiking in for the fishing? My wife says go get that in the basement (meaning the ODC 420) out of the hallway. While I carried it down there I wonder about the little weight it has and kinda big in a package....

I'm not too concerned with the weight on the ODC 420. I think I can pack it OK for short "day trip" type hikes. I have a very light wt U-boat tube (Caddis) that I can pack into a pack with other camping gear for longer overnight hike-ins.

I'll have to post a report or two of past trips to give folks an idea of the country and the fishing.

On one fishing trip you just post was a five miles hiking. I kinda think it would be pretty much. Canoeing seems more heavy to do that....unless they allow wheels? BWCA doesn't allow them but where I fish doesn't matter. (I haven't tried walking that far for a fishing but I did that hunting, not that far!)
