I have heard through the news that Utah residents and non-residents who use their boats in Utah waters will be required to have "motorboat liability insurance". According to this law only "motorboats" with greater than 50 horse power engines will have to be insured. I'm not a legalese guru, so you can read (and weap if you choose) at this web link:
http://www.le.state.ut.us/~2006/bills/hbillint/hb0242.htm
I don't know when this requirement will take affect.
However, look on the bright side, the legislature repealed the requirement to have the 1" high ID numbers on 4-wheelers and snowmobiles! Thats a good thing.

Just curious -- what's the advantages of not putting the 1" high ID numbers on your ATV. I'm just lazy, and haven't done it on my ATV, but I'd like to know why you wouldn't want them there?

Why? Beacase I hate putting on even the registration stickers, let alone more numbers. Why sticker up you $6,000 4 wheeler or $10,000 snowmobile with ugly numbers? Why put them on when the only time the can be read is when you are stopped anyway? If you have the registration paper w/you, as you are supposed to, the officer can check everything that way...no need for extra numbers. The purpose of the original legislation was a bunch of whining property owners down south complaining of ATV tresspasser and having numbers would be a way for the private individual to positively identify the ATV. Again, the numbers were so small that for anyone to see the numbers the machine would have to be stopped. I personally thought it was a stupid law and I never added the numbers to my snowmobile. I spoke with a couple of State Park rangers this year about the law and they agreed it was stupid and were not issuing tickets to anyone who didn't have the numbers. That is why.

I pay approximately $75 annually for my insurance through State Farm. My insurance does not cover replacing my boat (I figured it wasn't worth paying the extra premium for my old boat) just pays for injuries to all parties and repairs to the boats and other property owned by others.

Sounds like a guy who made a 49hp engine could do well in Utah.

I've got 50K full coverage including all electronics, motors and salvage/towing for about $200 a year. Can't remember who writes the policy, but Security Insurance in Spanish Fork took good care of me.

My Allstate poicy costs 180 a year and covers Liability in 500K/2M 100K property damage and replace everything to 50K on my boat as well as when in tow or storage. Had it for years, there are no good reasons not to have it on any boat.
#?s I'm glad hte #'s on a snowmobile can be read when they are stopped. Mine was sitting there, in front of the lodge at daniels when the sherriff ran the # to confirm it was a sled stolen from me 3 days earlier in Heber. So don't put #'s on your sled if you don't want to.

You would have to be dumb to steal someones sled. You would have to be a complete idiot to leave the numbers on after you stole it!!!! I wouldn't count that as much of a benifit. Most thieves are dumb but not that dumb.

I can honestly say speaking from the government (DMV) side of things, the numbers on ATV's and Snowmobiles have been nothing but problems in our computer system too. The whole thing has just been one big cluster since the idea was introduced. Granted, there are situations where the number has helped some folks out, like identifying stolen property but on the ATV's and probably sleds too, its hard to find a spot for the #'s thats readily visible and it has just been a pain. There was a while there when every time we ran a transaction on an ATV or sled, the system was assigning people new #'s for their recreational vehicles and we had to have our programmers go through and reissue regs to all the owners with new #'s. It just stunk up the joint. I'm glad they're gone... gives people one less thing to complain about.... But I'm pretty much an infantryman here.... just cannon fodder, so what we here in the rank and file think doesn't matter too much to the higher ups. Glad somebody mobilized and got rid of a situation that has just been a thorn in everyone's side to this point. Hmmm imagine that... the government agrees with the popular opinion for once.... [cool]

Good post. I read through the bill and could not see where a "motorboat" was defined as having to have a certain horsepower engine. Where is the 50 HP defination given???
Thanks

What about public land? What about ATV riders in areas of public land that are closed to ATV use? I'd love to see an ATV at Blind Lake (Boulder Mtn) with it's registration numbers on it. I'd take a picture and send it in to the Fishlake Nat'l Forest and request a citation so quick....
Again, I own an ATV and have not yet put the registration numbers on it. But, I don't see how ATV's/snowmachines should be any different than boats or cars. They have 'em, so why not everything else?

Lines 243-244:
© "Motorboat" does not include a boat with a manufacturer listed horsepower of 50 horsepower or less.
