[cool][#0000ff]There are NO blue cats in Utah. None in Utah Lake, none in Decker, none in Willard and none in Bear River.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There are big male channel cats that turn a bluish tinge, but they are the same species as the tan colored females...just a different gender.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Also, forget that you heard from your cousin who had a friend who's uncle knew somebody who once heard that the seiners in Utah Lake have been getting hundred pound catfish. Never happened. Also, no flatheads, no piranhas and no alligators.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]They only do occasional gill netting surveys in Utah Lake, mainly to keep tabs on the population of carp and predators...so they know how many june suckers to plant for their food.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]To the best of my knowledge, DWR is not really concerned about maintaining any kind of controlled population of the game species in Utah Lake. There was a small sampling done last year, after which they determined that 90 percent of the biomass in Utah Lake was carpkind.[/#0000ff]

Silly Pat, there are blue cats in UL...you just have to put them in some metheline blue dye for while, then the whole stinkin' fish will turn a very dark blue...meat included![Tongue] The nice thing about the dye, is that is is safe for humans!

I stopped at American Fork B.H. last weekend and some drunk redneck was bragging about catching 13 flatheads. What was he reffering to, Mudcats?

[cool][#0000ff]I repeat...THERE AIN'T NO BLUE CATS IN UTAH. They are not in the DWR list of species, even though there are fish listed that we never see or catch.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Utah goobers continue to argue that they have caught, or know someone who has caught blue cats. I keep hearing that stuff, over and over, since the early sixties. There is no way bucket biologists can transport enough blue cats to establish any kind of population. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have caught blue cats in the east, and flatheads in several states. I know what they look like and I can tell instantly, by counting the rays on the anal fin, the difference between channels and blues. There ain't no blues in Utah.[/#0000ff]

Blue cat.

[#0000ff]Here are a couple of pics of male channel cats that show the difference in shape and color. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Plus a picture of one caught by Out4Trout that has gotta rank as the all-time ugliest looking male catfish I have ever seen.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Butt...of course. Actually, anybody who has ever caught real blue cats would not likely mistake a male channel cat for a blue. The bigger a blue cat gets, the heavier its body gets in proportion to its head...just the opposite of a big male channel cat.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Blue cats get to be over a hundred pounds. A measly ten pounder, like some people think are blues in Utah, would be long and skinny...just a baby.[/#0000ff][url "http://www.rodnreel.com/news/images/catfish2l.jpg"][/url]

[cool][#0000ff]I am betting that your big catfish was a daddy channel cat. They do get wierd shaped heads. The distance between the eyes is not what makes a "flathead". Flatheads have a lower jaw that sticks out in front. You can grab on to it to hold them. But, they got sharp teeth.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here's a couple of pics of flatheads, and I am attaching a couple of the male and female channel cats we got today, down at Lindon. You notice that the male's head is more like a big bulb.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]And..."blue channels"? There is no such species. There are blue cats and channel cats. But, it is a term heard often in Utah. There are some "know-it-all goobers" that are ready to fight when you suggest that there is no such thing as a blue channel, or that there are NO blue cats in Utah.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That being said, some channel cats (besides the males) can develop a bluish tinge, rather than the more common tan color. A good example are the ones in Salem Pond. Even the females are a bluish color. Some folks speculate that it is because of the water chemistry in the hatchery they come from. But...they are still channel cats.[/#0000ff]

I just think it's so dang funny people on this board keep insisting that there are blue cats in Utah Lake. There never have been, there never will be, and it's obvious they don't know their species fi they think so.
