So I know that there are tons and tons of carp in Utah Lake. While I would probably like to see them all gone, I figure I might as well try to catch some while they are there. Anyone have some sure-fire methods and spots to catch carp on rod and reel, or on the fly from the shore? Any help would be great (particulary from the Lindon area)

[cool][#0000ff]There are lots of carp right inside the marina area of Lindon. Using worms will catch a few carp, along with the mudcats and white bass. However, if you get serious about fishing just for the carp, use dough balls. Make some up from any of the fancy recipes or just wad up some fresh bread into balls and chuck it out.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The carp tend to cruise pretty close to shore, so if you can soak a dough ball just off the bank, you can score some carpskis. No need for sinkers or long casts. Just bait a small treble or single hook and lob it out a few feet from the bank.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you want to catch them on flies, they will be on the surface slurping up bugs and other "stuff" right at daybreak most mornings. You can walk the bank and cast to them or chase them in a tube. Once the boats hit the water, or wind ripples the water, the fish go deeper and are more difficult to catch with flies.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There are also lots of carp cruising in the flooded reeds and tamarisks to the north of the marina. Only problem is that when you hook a fish, you are doomed to lose it in the structure. Arrows work better.[/#0000ff]

Thanks for the information, I knew you would be able to help. I have just heard a lot about the growing popularity of carp fishing, and I would like to do my part to hopefully cut down on the population in the lake. If anyone else has some ideas about carp fishing down there, I would love to hear it.

Buy some explosives [ ] Light fuse, toss in reeds and run like the dickens. Ater big boom go and collect your carp. Seriously you may find fishing for them a bit hard than it may seem. They are easy to catch when you are fishing for something else. When you are trageting them they can be very fussy. Good luck in the carp hunting........hey are we going to have to call Carp Punisher Jr?

[cool][#0000ff]Don't worry about CP. He gots no finesse when it comes to carp harvesting. His favorite methods include a twang or a bang.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Seriously, if Utahns really want to get serious about carp fishing, they should check in on some of the European carp fishing websites. That is a religion over there. They use special "match" rods, exotic dough baits, fancy rigs and all that stuff. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Actually, much of the European style of carp fishing would be illegal in Utah, since it involves "baiting" (chumming) an area to bring in the fish and get them feeding. I used to watch some transplanted Brits down in Arizona. They would set up in a cove, on Saguaro Lake and they had a young lady paddle out in a rubber raft to scatter bait pellets over the area into which they were going to cast. Once she paddled back to shore, they cast out their baited hooks, on long rods, and the action began. When the carp really came in there would be two or three of them hooked up at a time. Some of those Arizona rednecks scoffed at the Brits, but it was the carp catchers who were having all the fun.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]It is amazing how many websites are now devoted to carp fishing. HERE IS A GOOD ONE[/#0000ff]

[#ff4040]I checked out your link, and it's cool that there are so many people devoted to carp fishing but I wouldn't consider it "the world's greatest sportfish."[/#ff4040]

[#0000ff]Surprisingly, more and more anglers are coming to the conclusion that carp are tougher to catch and harder fighters than most of the other fish they have available. Of course you can't have much respect for a fish that you snag often and is just a nuisance. But, if you deliberately go after them, and find out how elusive they can be, you get a different perspective. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I don't know many fishermen who won't admit that they get some enjoys from the battle ol' buglemouth puts up. They do bend your stick and stretch your string.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But...worlds greatest sportfish? Nah.[/#0000ff]

[#ff4040]Oh, I do agree that they are fun to catch and without them somedays are just not as interesting when fishing. Saying that they're the greatest sportfish is stretching the string a little too far.[/#ff4040]

When the Provo river is fishable at the State Park . I fish some holes with jigs for other species and always get some big carp on 3" curly tails . I'll catch white bass and crappie too , but have never caught anything else .

TD I can see some uses for the maker setup here in Utah and not for carp. That was a most educational link. Thanks dude.

Thanks for the link and all of the info. I am running low on explosives so I will probably try some dough. Like I said before, they are there, so I might as well try to catch them. But I may refer to them as "Fresh Water Bone Fish" just to make them seem more exotic.

[#505000]Other than if I intend to poke holes in them or the other tasy game fish are being elusive I don't target them specifically, but I gotta say..... if you can snag one on the ol' dorsal fin prepare for the fight of your life. [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]Hands down carp are the hardest fighting fish I have ever fought.[/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]Ok ok so I lied.... if I see a raft of carp while out in the toon I'll start throwing some plastic at them. Sometimes they'll slurp it, other times I get a dorsal feeder. Either way it's a heck of a fun fight especially I you can get one on light gear.[/#505000]
