Deer Creek help
#1
With Strawberry pretty much finished til ice off I was thinking of getting the boat out tomorrow and trying Deer Creek. I have only fished Deer creek once and that was on the ice so I really don't know where to go or what to use. Anyone care to help a guy out and give some suggestions of where on the lake to go and what to use. I don't have down riggers or lead line but everything else is fair game. I probably wouldn't be going up til afternoon. Thanks!

I recommend going by the island. If it's windy, you might get a bit more protection in Wallsburg Bay though. Smallies like the island - at least they do in late April through June. Who knows with this weather though.

[cool][#0000ff]There have been some good rainbows and browns taken along the steep banks below the train tracks lately. They have been hitting both trolled lures and Rapalas and similar lures cast to the bank.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]This is also a good time of year to deep troll big flies for big browns.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If you go in the afternoon, take a sail and you won't need your motor. The protected areas behind the island, in Rainbow Bay or in Walsburg may be your only options.[/#0000ff]

I've always had good luck casting spinners over by the railroad tracks. Probably too cold for bass still. But, you can pick up some trout doing that, and maybe some walleye if you want to troll over there.

Thanks for your help and suggestions all. We got to the lake at 3 and trolled around til about 7. We trolled the whole bank under the tracks from across from the state park marina to across from the island and then crossed over aroung the island and then out in the flats toward where the river comes in. We caught 5 rainbows with the biggest being about 17 inches. We didn't really mark a lot of fish. We long lined about everything in the tackle box and caught fish on 4 different things so nothing worked better than any other. The wind blew most the day but not too bad and got snowed on a little. Not a bad day overall but I was wishing I was fishing Strawberry!
