How to tie spawn
#1
Step #1 [inline spawn1.jpg]
Place the spawn netting over the vice .

Step #2 [inline spawn3.jpg]
Place the spawn on the netting with a clean plastic spoon , tuck it into the vice and close it .

Step #3 [inline spawn3.jpg]
Draw the netting up , not too tight or the netting will rupture the egg membrane . I keep a small hand towel and some distilled water ( do not use tap water ) to keep my hands clean .

Step #4 [inline spawn4.jpg]
Raise the extra netting out of the way and procead to tie the sack closed , this can be done with thread or "spider-wire" not the fishing line but a thin rubber thread that will draw tight without having to tie a knot , the stuff works great !!

Step #5 [inline spawn5.jpg]
Keep the extra netting raised and bring up your thread .

Step#6 [inline spawn6.jpg]
Cut the netting and the thread at the same time , leave about an 1/8 " of both .

Step #7 [inline spawn7.jpg]
Place your spawn container under the vice , open the vice and let it fall in .

If you can't find a spawn vice you can purchase one from one of our sponsors , Cabella's has them on-line .
Our fellow member Stormey26 uses a 1/2 socket as a vice while out on the river , fresh untreated eggs work great .

Good post, I see you found a spawnie. Once you got it was the best thing since slice bread. If you don't have a socket use a bottle cap from your 20oz. coke. Did pretty good the other day and landed 2 steelhead on the PM near Wallaha.

Intresting pictures, I never used spwan bags, as a kid I was taught to use a snelled hook size 10 or 12 eye in, snelled down at the bend of the hook, make a loop in the line and place a hunk of spawn in the skeen tween the loop of line and the hook and draw the line tight, cast out in hopes of a bite and it works most of the time, any one intrested in seeing how I do it the river just opend up and is free of most ice, if you can get up early and fish long hours, your more than welcome to learn my trick. FISH ON!!!

I've tried that but in the wrong water current , it usually lasted two casts . when in slower water it worked fantastic ! must be the way the eggs kinda become more animated than a regular ball shape .

Yea, now I'm spoiled[Wink] .
It took a few times to learn i was making them too tight and ended up opening a canister of mush bags the next day [crazy].
Gave up on the chemical cures and now do the water cure , works great !
9 for 10 on the last trip , 1- 1/2 hours [cool] , kept one male and released the rest , i'm looking for a wall mount now .
some guy landed a 20# fresh male at the foot a week and a half ago , saw the pic up at the dam store , fresh crome !
i want one like that !!!!!!

lonehunter where are you from ? any time you would like to fish my area you are more than welcome, I got my boat out for the first run of the year to check for any bugs in her and she ran just fine and like any self respecting angler I took a few rods and bait, need less to day the waters isnt ready to fish yet its kinda merky do to the spring run off but, we did get a hand full of hits and boated 2 fish, I took a member from my web site out and he cault his first whitefish and it was a nice one, he took pictures and is pose to join BFT and post the pictures of the fish and my boat with the new BFT stickers she is sporting.

when i fish behind the power house it has bout 12 to 18 mph currents and the skeen spawn last a few hits or a few cast what ever come first, I use borax on my skeen spawn and that seems to make it tougher and holds on better, not that i need it cured but to make it tougher.

let me know a day in advance and we can go fishing any time, after I get back to work pending on where i am working at, i can fish evenings and all weekends befor july 15th after july 15th i only night fish for walleye and run my hounds in the morning (day light hours) and fish all night. FISH ON!!!
