Boulder Mountain?
#1
Anybody been to Boulder Mountain? The spring lakes I fish are anywhere from 8000 to 9000. Anybody know if the ice if off any of them. I usually wait until May, but just curious.

I dont think so, there would still be ice up there at that Altitude. I would wait until the end of may.

Even on Memorial Day weekend you may or may not be able to get into any of the Lakes due to the snow on the roads. At least that's been my experience.

I was up there last year during the last week of June and still saw plenty of snow. The lakes were ice-free, but still plenty of snow.

PBH???

Mike,
I go down to the Boulders every year usually in the 1st or 2nd week of June, and if last year is any indication you will have to wait for awhile to get into some of the higher lakes. We had a hard time getting around up on top last year on the 4 wheelers and never did make it to our "secret" fishing spot because of the snow!!

Remember we have had a LOT of storms the last several weeks. Most of those storms turn to snow on top of Boulder, which will probably delay the accessibility to the top lakes.

I have never actually fished the lakes on top, but would really love to sometime this year. We vacation in Loa every year, just need to head South a little bit.....

Lakes below the rim normally become accessible during the middle to end of may; last year it was later due to the unusually large snowpack. This year, the Boulder has not received as much snow so it should be accessible during the middle of May.

Lakes above the rim, though, are often not accessible until the beginning of July; in fact, the roads to the Boulder Top are often not opened until the 4th of July weekend.

It will depend on the weather. If it stays warm you may be able to get up there around mid to late may. If it is cold or snows some more, take your skis or snowshoes and don't plan too much soft water activity. Keep in mind, that for some bodies of water and areas in the Boulder vicinity, access can be difficult even into June - depending on the weather. Always be prepared for the unexpected.

For those of you that don't know what it means to be prepared:

1. If you go in June, take an ice-auger just in case.
2. Expect snow. Both drifts, and storms.
3. Leave the shorts at home. Take a coat.
