Does anyone know when the Uinta Mountains generrally get clear enough to fish? Like mirror lake and all those lakes along that road that goes through the Uinta's from Kamas? Is the road open or partially open? Is Smith and Morehouse clear of ice, can it be fished from the shore. I appreciate it[ ]

Most years that road does not open until just before Memorial Day. Last year they cut it pretty close I think.
The higher elevation lakes don't get accessible usually until very late June.

Last year the Mirror Lake Highway was still closed just past Soapstone on Memorial weekend. If I remember right the road did not open all the way until middle - late June.

Whooaaa, easy there. It will still be some time before the Uintas open up. When I was up there the last week of June last year, and while the road was open and there was open water, there was still plenty of ice. As of 9:00 this morning, Trial Lake still had about 68" of snow.
I was fishing on the Fourth of July on a lake that still had some ice coming off.
For road plans, you can call the Wasatch-Cache NF recreation center (inside of REI) and see what they know. (801) 466-6411. If they don't know, call the Kamas Ranger District of the W-C NF (435) 783-4338 and they could probably tell you.
My suspicion is that the Mirror Lake HWY is open to about mile 9 or 10--right around the first bridge. Who knows, though, the website ( http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/wcnf/conditions/road.shtml) says they try to keep it open up to Soapstone.
If you find out anything, let us know. We're all itching with spring fever!

[ ]I called the Kamas Ranger and he told me its all closed up, like you said. Smith and Morehouse road is not open and you cant go to the lake, same with that road that goes through the Uintas, its closed to about Soapstone. I guess I wont be driving there this weekend, I am now thinking June is the month to go. Sometimes I tend to forget that just because the snow melts in the SLC it isnt the same high in the mountains. All my favorite holes are closed up until the thaw comes through. I guess i'll be heading up to Tibble Fork, cus I gotta get up in the mountains!!

Other spots to fish? Well, you can chase the ice-offs around the state, fish the muddy rivers, or head south where the ice has been off for weeks.
That's what great about Utah. A little something for everyone.
If you're fixin' to get your fix of the mountains, Tibble would be good like you mentioned. Also, some of the lower lakes in Sanpete in Manti-LaSal NF are probably about there. They're about like Tibble fish-wise, but pretty settings in their own right. And if they don't pan out, they're hauling some big boys out of the reservoirs in Sanpete Valley, especially Ninemile.

Do you know how long of a drive it is ruffly from the SLC to the Sanpete Valley and Ninemile. Ive never made it to any of the southern lakes, nothing further away than Strawberry to be honest.

Mapquest calls it 2 hrs, 16 mins to Manti. I go there at least once a month and I'd say it's more like an hour and 45 minutes or so, depending on the traffic in Utah County.
Ninemile would put you right around the 2 hour mark. Lots of little lakes in the Manti-LaSal NF up any of those canyons--Manti Canyon, Mayfield, Sixmile, etc. Up too far there's still plenty of snow, but do some digging and you'll find some pretty ones down lower that will help you through your mountain withdrawal.

You can cross-country ski until mid-June in the High Uintas during wet years like this. Mirror Lake won't be open until July this year. Trial Lake and vacinity should hopefully be open by mid June, but I've seen years when it's still partially frozen then.

[cool]One way to tell for the Uintas is if you watch Shepherds Peak east of Farmington, when the snow is gone from this area then most likely the Uintas are accessible. It is the rule of thumb that I go by anyway.

Moon Lake is much lower and is usually accessible by the first of June - sometimes a little sooner.
