Shore fishing at Willard friday.
#1
Going to try some shore fishing at Willard tommorow morning and wondered where is a decent spot to try from. I will probably go to the South Marina area and would like to try the dike. Is there a road access along the West side of the dike? Where do folks park to get closer to the feed lot area of the dike? I'd appreciate your suggestions. thanks.

[cool][#0000ff]I caught two wipers this morning, from my float tube, not more than a long cast from the dike off the corner at the south of the harbor entrance. The fish were only there briefly and then gone.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have always done better fishing from the dikes to the north of the south marina. That requires a pretty good hike. There is no road access from the paved road. You have to park near the place where the canal goes under the road, by the big water users bldg. Then, you either go under the metal post gate or up and over the wooden angler stile. Then, you hike the full length of that road out to the end and follow it around to the right. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You can sometimes catch crappies and walleyes right around the point, on the north side. It is often good fishing for cats, off the dike, beginning about 25 yards from the harbor entrance and going clear around the dike, past the first corner past the feedlot. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If you have two rods, put them both out with different baits and try different distances from the rocks. Sometimes the fish come in close. Other times you gotta get it a ways out there. Keep moving about every half hour or so until you find fish. Once you get in "the zone" you can do well. Then, you gotta carry what you keep all the way back to the car.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Some veteran "bank tanglers" take wagons or other wheeled carts to carry their gear and fish. The gravel road out is not too bad. You can also use a mountain bike. I used to just use a big backpack. That was in the "olden days" (stone backpack).[/#0000ff]

There is a pretty good trail over the dike about 2-3 miles past the south marina turnoff. I kinda stumbled on it a couple years ago & could drive to it again but to tell you how to get there is gonna be fun. If you just drive on past the marina turnoff & keep going north, you'll eventually get almost to the feedlot. If memory serves, the road comes to a "T" there. Turn right & drive east about 1/2 mile & watch for a kinda crappy road that heads north. I think you can see a foot trail over the dike from the road going east. There's where you want to get to. There is a parking area of sorts & a foot bridge over a drainage ditch to get to the dike. I've done pretty good there. Walk about 1/2 to 3/4 mile west along the dike & give it a try.

Just seen your post this morning thank you for the reply. Went out Friday and Saturday to fish Willard. Seen the T you spoke of but didn't go any further. Fished along the dike past the South Marina where it turned North and didn't get any bites. tried a spot suggested by Tube dude on Sat. and got a hit fishing a worm off the bottom. Saw a couple of walleye caught at the entrance of the South Marina as boats trolled going out. Fished with jigs, worms, and crankbaits on both days. I'll try Willard again in a couple weeks. Going to Boysen Res., WY. this weekend. I'll try the dike again soon.

I got to looking on Terraserver USA & found that I gave you a bum steer. If you go to the feedlot & turn right (east) you can't miss. Just keep driving until you come to a "T". Turn left (north) there & you'll drive right to the parking spot if you just keep going straight.
