Flaming Gorge, and walleyes??? NO!
#1
A rumor has started here and elsewhere about walleyes showing up in Flaming Gorge. I just spoke with Wyoming Fish and Wildlife guys in Green River by telephone, and they say there is no evidence of walleyes in Flaming Gorge. They even stated that they dropped gill nets in the lake this year in areas that walleye should/could hold in an effort to find one. None. There are Burbot (ling) showing up in the north end, but again, they say the've never seen or heard of a walleye in the lake.

If anyone has any credible information to the contrary, or any reason to believe I received false information from Wyo. Fish and Wildlife, PLEASE post it here or send me a PM. Otherwise, they're not here. And they don't need to be! We've got plenty of other fish!!!

If Walleye showed up in the Gorge that would be horrible. I hope all of the rumors are false.

[cool][#0000ff]Easy there, Jim. That was suggested by our walleye-wacko member CROSSINEYES. He no doubt had a (wet) dream that they were in there and looking for just one more excuse to come over and fish the Gorge more. If you hadn't of totally corrupted him and Utwalleye when they fished with you, it might not be so much of a problem.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]We definitely appreciate your keeping your finger on the pulse over there and doing all that you do to help maintain the fishery.[/#0000ff]

I heard that rumor, too, and not just from CROSSINEYES. Hope it's not true. That place doesn't need any more teeth.

[cool][#0000ff]Poor Flaming Gorge seems to have become the dumping ground for the bucket biologists...if the rumor is true. Let us just hope that it is like most rumors...wishful thinking by some and a horrible idea to others.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Take 'er easy Ken, ol' buddy. All I remembered is that you agreed that having some eyes in there might not be such a bad idea...not that you started it.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Cousin Daffy DID start the idea, as I recall...along with other things. [/#0000ff]

No eyes in the gorge hummm? Makes me wonder why they have put them in the procomation(sp),then put a limit on them ?Why put a limit on fish that isnt there?Daffy didnt start any thing he was just passing on the same infomation that fishermen in Sweetwater county have been hearing. When I went to the Wy Game and Fish meeting last year over the proposed regulation changes. They (wyo g/f ) tolded eveyone in attendence that walleyes were in the gorge. So who do we belive?????If they were to ever get a foothold at the gorge ,walleyes would ruin a great fishery.

WOW! They (wyo. G&F) really said that at a meeting? And today they just told me "no." "Hmmmm" is right. I assume you're sure they weren't talking about the Burbot, which they did declare present, put in the proclamation, and set a limit on. Is there actually a statement in the proclamation about a walleye limit for Flaming Gorge? (Yes, i'm guilty of never having never looked at it this year!)

It wouldn't suprise me if a management agency couldn't get another one of their BS stories straight, but the Wyoming guys have always been truthful with me, and they even appear to have some knowledge of what's going on at the Gorge, unlike another state agency I know that couldn't manage a goldfish in a bowl.

Are there any other witnesses out there who heard Wyo. G&F say there were walleyes in here at a public meeting??? Please chime in . . .

ok I just went backed and looked at the wyo regs.Is is some what confusing the way it reads. It dosent speficilly(sp) say anything about a limit for walleyes in the gorge .What is does say it there is a limit on them in the green river drainages. The gorge is part of the green river drainage. So I was assuming and maybe mistakenly that this also appiled to the gorge, and I think it does, but dont quote me on that.As for the meeting last year Mr. Weingert was one of the biologist at this meeting ,maybe he could shed some light on this. This sure seems fishy to me as they poisioned the Jim bridger surge pond two years ago,in a attempt to rid it of illegally planted walleye,or so the story goes. The surge pond flows in the gorge ,through the bitter creek drainage(i think). If they are in the gorge ,I hope every one of them are caught and removed, and if they arent there ,then I guess we can feel blessed.

[cool][#0000ff]Sorry but there is no reference to walleyes being in Flaming Gorge in the Utah proclamation. No reference, no limit, nada.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]They are in the standard proclamation because they exist in many waters throughout the state. But, they are not officially recognized by Utah as being in Flaming Gorge...yet.[/#0000ff]

Wait until I'm done stocking Smelt in there. Then I'll stock Walleye. You guys are getting way ahead of the program. Geeess, all this stuff takes time and I have a real job too.

Board,
I was at the same fisheries meeting that Kokeking was at, and to be real honest (sorry King) I don't remember the Wyo GF guys saying that there were Walleyes in the Gorge. What I do remember is that they said some fisherman had shown them pictures of a bunch of caught Walleye, and stated that they had caught them in the Gorge. The GF had no concrete evidence that those fish actually came from FG. My fishing partner worked as a biologist tech for 12 years on the Gorge and he told me that they had NEVER caught a Walleye in any of their gill net sets.
Burbout are very real, as the GF told Jim. Coupled with millions of SMB, some Brown Trout (not many), and thousands of small Lake trout the forage base at the Gorge is on the brink of collapse and that is not just my opinion.

Other than a healthy population of bows, kokes, and crawdads, what other forage is there is the Gorge? Are there any baitfish.. shiners, shad, etc?

WITH THE BURBOT SHOWING THE FORAGE BASE JUST GREW WITH ITS ADDITITION. ALSO THOSE SMALL LAKERS ADD TO THE BASE SO WHITCH FORAGE BASE IS DWINDLING. OYA THE KOKES. MAYBEE THE FISH AND GAME SHOULD DROP THE LIMMIT ON THE TO 1 FISH PER PERSON IN STED OF WHAT IT IS. IVE SEEN MANY PICS HERE ON THIS BOARD WITH GUYS HOLDING STRINGERS FULL. AND A BIG LAKER ONLY HARVEST 1 PER WEEK. HM WHO IS HURTING THE KOKES MOORE? WHEN GUYS TAKE MANY PEOPLE UP AND SHOW THEM HOW TO OVER HARVEST WITH THEIR INTENTION BEING NOT TO TEACH AND SHARE KNOWLAGE BUT TO SELL MOORE LURES? WHO IS REALY ASSISTING THE FORAGE BASE AND WHOS KILLING IT? HMMMMM. IM NOT SHURE AND REALY DONT FISH FOR KOKES OR BASS OR EVEN SLIMMER RAINBOWS. THOSE MACS HOWEVER BRING IN MANY DALLORS FOR THAT LOCAL ECONNOMY MOORE PEOPLE FROM MUTCH FARTHER AWAY TRAVEL TO THE GORGE FOR MACS THAN ANY OTHER FISH THAT SWIMS THER... IM NOT TRYING TO START CRAP JUST SHARING WHAT IVE LERNED. MANY MIGHT DISLIKE WHAT IVE SHARED BUT OTHER WILL SEE THE TRUTH IN MY WORDS.

[size 1]"WHEN GUYS TAKE MANY PEOPLE UP AND SHOW THEM HOW TO OVER HARVEST WITH THEIR INTENTION BEING NOT TO TEACH AND SHARE KNOWLAGE BUT TO SELL MOORE LURES"[/size]

People like Sokeyeslayer and TubeDude (and many more) openly share their vast fishing knowledge without asking for anything in return. Not once have I seen them (or anyone else on this board for that matter) tell people that they would have to buy equipment from them for their info.
So saying that there are people on this board share their info to make a buck is unfair and untrue. Even Tarponjim who gets paid good money to take people to catch big fish shares his info.

I add my "amen" to what Flycasting wrote. So what if they sell a few more lures or if Jim books a few more fishing trips from sharing their vast information on here, or by taking a few anglers out to fish. I guarantee you that taking folks out fishing, solely for the price of the fuel that they burn, is not the most efficient way to sell a few lures. They do it because they get pleasure out of helping others learn how to catch fish. I find it frustrating when anglers pick their favorite species of fish and feel that all anglers should bow down to that fish at the exclusion of all other species.
