Tubin Yuba 6-16-06
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Launched between the bridge and the dam about 6:30. I just knew there was a northern in there somewhere. Third cast with a shallow diving perch colored crankbait and it was game on. 24" 4# scrapper. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I thought I was on to something. Nope. No troutskis out in the main lake either. Didn't see anything on sonar. A few bank tanglers and none of them got a bite. We got a few 7" perch on the way back to the car about 9. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Packed up and headed across to Painted Rocks. Got there about 10, along with the power squadron. Kicked out to the islands in fairly calm water. A light breeze came up and we started getting some hits on our spinners. They were mostly small 10" - 12" young rainbows. I got two to the tube and lost several others. They hit hard and fought bigger than they were.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]TubeBabe scored one nice 17" football rainbow. I looked over just in time to see it take major air. It went higher than her head. She hit at least high C. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]By 11 o'clock the boat wakes and the increasing breezes pushed us toward the ramp. Still getting some bitty bow whacks but we had overfunned.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water temp at the dam was 65 at launch and 66 at 9 AM. It was 68 at Painted Rocks, but cooled to 66.5 when the cooling breezes kicked up.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water level is about where it was two weeks ago...about 5 feet from maximum spill level. The warming water seems to have the bigger trout down deeper. We did see some larger fish near the bottom in 30 - 35 feet of water on sonar. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]All of the fish we hooked came on gold spinners. Couldn't buy a hit on silver lures today. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Probably won't hit Yuba again until cooler weather in the fall.[/#0000ff]

I fished Yuba tonight from 6:30 to 8:30. Caught six fish, all trout. Two were just under 4 lbs. The rest were about 2 lbs, I didn't weigh the smaller ones. All came on brass spinners. There was only one family fishing with bait, worms. They weren't catching anything when I left. I fished from the bridge north to where you first hit the gravel. Perfect weather. I was going to go again in the morning, but it sounds like it might be an evening bite. Fishing was fast at 6:30 and got slower as it got later, but both of the bigger fish came after there were shadows on the lake.

[cool][#0000ff]The bite is often better for the trout in the evening. But, as you know, there is also usually more breeze. Tubes and breezes don't go well together. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Glad you got into them.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Sold the boat. Never did put it in the water.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You'd be surprised how far I can kick. Tough to tow a skier though. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I woulda gone over and worked the brush on the other side of Painted Rocks yesterday but the power squadron was running right along the rocks and the bank. Tough to compete with them.[/#0000ff]

nice, you sold it, who is the lucky person ? yea thats the one thing about yuba painted rocks, east beach area, the wave makers all day long. this time of year, about 5 years ago we would knock the eyes smooth off east beach. some days by the big dead tree we would get bit on every pass. had a few pike take my worm harness off the south point. it's about 1 1\2 miles form painted rocks ramp, that would be a pretty long paddle and the wind comes from the south most the time so the paddle back would be a tough one.

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah, we decided that for our style of fishing and traveling that the boat would be just an inactive and expensive liability more than a fishing tool. Sold it within hours of posting it on KSL.com. A guy was heading to Montana over Memorial Day weekend and the boat was everything he and his two sons wanted...for fishing and hunting. He had just sold a smaller tin outboard rig and the hitch and wiring setup fit his truck perfectly.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]About the eyes in Yuba. I hear tell they are proliferating. I plan to work them over this fall. I saw quite a few fish on the bottom in spots that are good walleye hangouts, but did not have the stuff to fish them right.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The perch are definitely coming on strong. I caught them wherever I fished yesterday. In one spot between the islands, in five feet of water, I lifted about 15 to 20 in a row on a rod length of line and a roadrunner jig. Most were about 7" long...just right for walleye chow...or pike provisions.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I am attaching a pic of the "food chain". It is the remnants of a large perch that was in the pike. I kept it so that TubeBabe could taste it (she's never eaten pike). The large perch actually had a recognizeable smaller perch in its gut. [/#0000ff]

Sounds like an adventure. Did you fillet the "food chain" perch for TubeBabe as well?[Wink]

How did tubebabe like the pike? We liked it except for the bones. Cant wait till fall to start landing some of those bruiser bows and maybe a large pike. The southwest side of yuba should hold a ton of perch. When it was drained the vegetation there grew outrageously out of control which is a good thing for the forage fish.

[cool][#0000ff]Although I have filleted perch as small as 2" (to win a bet), I did not put the knife to that bitty one. First of all, it was a bit "degraded". Second of all, I was technically in violation of current proclamation regs since possession of any perch from Yuba is prohibited. Of course, I did not know I had one (two) until I opened the pike.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]We have not cooked the pike yet. It is on the menu for tomorrow. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have eaten pike several times, and I find it somewhere between bass and walleye in texture and taste. It is good stuff. As you have found, there are lots of "Y" bones in pike. There are two rows of them. If you know how to slice out those rows (as I have shown in the pic) you end up with boneless and delectable eating.[/#0000ff]

Gonna have to hook up with you this fall and catch a pike so i can see how you fillet it. Looks easy but i havent kept many that i have caught out of there because there were to many walleyes and perch to feed us.[Tongue]

[cool][#0000ff]We don't need to wait until fall to go fishing together. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In the meantime, for anyone who catches a pike and wants to get the Y bones out, here is a video that is among the better I have seen. [/#0000ff]
