Hit E-lake with the family after running around like chickens with our heads cut off for a hour going should we go or should we just stay home and save the gas. I received a minnow trap for Christmas and really wanted to try it out so finally we go. Hit the lake about 5 pm only to find it is full and the road to drive on is under water right after the boat ramp. Only been there once before and did not understand what full at E-lake was. Park and start walking with all the stuff a wife can throw in the car with 10 mins notice for a few hours of fishing with the kids. Wind blowing like crazy. The pack train doesn't go far but far enough to not see the road under the water right in front of us. Put everything down and we have no bait. Great dad. Finally find some PB for wife and daughter and let my boy loose with a spinner. Dad wants some minnows.
Tubedudes instructions I had printed out sounded so simple at home. At lake seem to be in some other language. Put trap together, bread in a ball, rope tied to trap, throw trap in water, go back and help with kids. Could it be that easy? Nothing happening but wind and no bites. Fix boys reel get three cast of my own and am thinking I should have stayed home. Go and check the trap and we have MINNOWS. Dad happy, kids go nuts, we put one on my boys pole and before I can get back to fishing my boy has a 18 in cut on the line. Everyone wants a bobber and a minnow. Dad changes everyone over to minnows except dad and everyone gets bites. Dad checks trap to find more minnows.
Always check the knot on the rope before throwing a minnow trap out. Rope in hand, trap flying through the air, rope not going through the air. Wouldn't you know it but three boats and a car show up at the ramp as dad strips to get his trap back. Water isn't that cold.[blush] Back to shore with the trap no harm done tie on rope twice this time throw trap back into lake. Should have hooked the tie to both halves of the trap after putting the rope back on. Dad strips again.[crazy] Much faster at finding it this time though. No there are no pictures.
Finally ended up catching 13 fish by 9pm and missed more then that. Hard to tell at times if getting bites as the wind would slow down but never stopped. Think we had to small of hooks for minnows. Any suggestions on size of hooks to use would be helpful. Have two large cookie sheets of minnows in the fridge that hopefully will be ready to freeze in the morning.
Anyone still reading this that lost a plastic container at E-lake I found it. If you can identify the container and what was in it I'll return it. I'll cry but I'll give it back. I know I would want it back.
