Motorguide or Minn Kota

I am looking to buy an electric bow mount within the next couple days and would like to hear everyone's opinion on either a Minn Kota or a Motorguide. I have only owned a Minn Kota, but liked it OK. Does either have features that the other doesn't?????

I've owned and used lots of both, but only Minn Kota the past 10 years. Minn Kota Powerdrives are easiest to repair when something goes out, and seem to outlast everything else. There's basically only 3 parts that ever need replaced: the steering motor, the circut board, and the shaft and motor housing itself. The first two can be done for $100, and I usually replace one or the other only once every two years (around 200 days fishing with them a year, including in saltwater!). Main motor and shaft last many, many years.

One note, beware of the powerdrive foot pedals. They're junk, and wear out quickly. Get a cable-steer model if you'll only be operating it with your foot from the bow, or a remote steering control (co-pilot) for operation from anywhere in the boat.

Excellent, Thank you. I am looking for a 55 lb. thrust, and i sure wish I had it last night at Willard when I ran out of gas and had to be towed into the marina.

I have a 54# thrust 50" shaft on the front of my old fiberglass boat 15 1/2'.
It's a Motorguide, I prefer the motorguide pedal compared to the Minn Kota but that's just my preference. I don't have anything against Minn Kota either, I have one for my transom. I got a good deal on it from Cabelas where you can try the pedals out. I'm not sure what kind of boat you have but make sure the "cable" from the motor to the pedal is long enough. I didn't realize that when I bought it but it was just the right length. Let me know what you get and how you like it. I was debating on a Minn Kota with remote but the $$$ was a killer.

That's kinda like Ford, Chev or Dodge, I'm glad the Minn Kota seems to be very popular so far. I have used this brand for 14 to 15 years and other than the circuit board needing repair on my earlier one I haven't had a lick of problem. I currently have a 74 # thrust on my Crestliner that I had installed at Robertson's Marine when I purchased my boat 5 years ago. I luv it and have'nt had any problem. After having said that (Knock on wood) I'll probably have a problem this weekend in Idaho. I agree with the rest Minn-Kota all the way[cool]
