SMALL MOUTH BASS
#1
Ill be heading up to the Gorge next Wed threw the week-end. I've never fished for small mouth. I pretty much know where to fish but I haven't a clue what to use. Friday Im going to Cabelas to stock up on few last minute items. So I was wondering if any one could suggest some lures to purchase to try to catch a smallie. Lakers and kokes are still my passion but would just like to try something different for change. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Anything that resembles a craw, their favorite food, should work. Curly tails. 3 in., in watermellon, smoke, or darker green colors with some red fleck should be great. I'd go light on the lead head jig, i.e. 1/8 to 1/16th ot rvrn lightet if yo0u can. I've also used small pearl curly tails and had good success. Lately, I've also used maniac reapers or regular reapers in those craw colors just because I had em. Take a look at previopus posts. Bigger fish are in deeper water.

Senko's in Watermelon with black flake works very well everywhere for both Large, and SM Bass. I like the 4" for the smallies, and the 5" for the LM. Fish them un-weighted in calm water preferably casting to structure. In windy conditions add as little weight as possible to get the Senko to drop. The slower the better. Typically the hit is on the drop. Let the Senko do it's thing without adding any un-necessary action. Dead sticking them is the best approach. You can do the lift to 11 o-clock thing and drop, once it's hit bottom and has sat a bit. Once it's back to the boat, repeat to new location. A fairly fast action sensitive pole is a must to detect takes. Follow this link for more on the Senko, and rigging/fishing methods.

This it one of the best soft baits to catch bass on in all conditions. Good Luck!
