Big ole Muskie 7/7/06
#1
Hit Pineview again today Started fishing around 11:00 am. I decided to concentrate on the large ones today. The south shore I was cathcing the mid size tigers had mud lines about 30ft from shore. Figured casting in the brush was a lost cause today. I spent 7 hours trolling in deeper water trying to catch the big one. Did not get one bite until the last 1/2 hour I was there. The good thing was it happened to be a very good fish. It was a nice fat 48-49 inch fat muskie Smile It may have been a new record. If it was not by much so I did a quick mesurement snapped a quick photo and let it go. My guess was it was easily over 30 lbs. I figured it was not worth killing the fish to beat the record by just a hair if in fact it had been. I am still after the 55" tiger that will stay in the books for awhile. Lol. Here are a few pics of the hog!

[red] Man, that is a great looking musky. What were you using or dragging? I got to get up there. How deep do think you were? How fast were you trolling?[/red]

Nice catch! You still have a few weeks of prime time to get that recrod.

So I take it that the water level is droping fairly fast?

Hey Don,
Long time no speak! This couple of years of barely fishing finally caught up with me. I told my work I was taking a month off and doing what I seem to do best Tongue It is a different story up here at Pineview. I have never seen the lake so full this time of year. Every day it seems I have to adjust. I did realize we are in a full moon cycle today. That explains alot! Thats how far removed from fishing I have been. I dont even remeber when the full moon happens. Lol. Its too bad CO. doesnt plant as heavy as the DWR in utah does at Pineview. I do congratulate the DWR on Pineview! I just cant believe the girth on the bigger fish these days. 4 years ago a 50 inch Tiger was pretty slim compared to what they are now. I guess you can blame that on a few good years of protection in flooded brush for the baby fish. I am impressed! Wont be soon until a 40+ comes out of there if the winters keep up!

Hey Nate-

That must really be some fishery! And those fish are so gorgeously colored. Do you have any idea how old that fish was? I need to do some research on those tigers' growth rates. Anyway, nice job and nice to see you doing what you love! You guys sure are lucky up there.

from what I have read its probably 6-8 years old. I am not sure? All I know is they are getting fat the last couple of years. The gierth on the big ones is much greater than a almost 50" fish was 3 or 4 years ago. If the water levels stay high for a few more years we might see a 40lb tiger in UT soon! Just look at hauser lake, MT or Quincey Lake, CO! It is a good possibility. Pineview has the food source and probably the greatest population of tigers anywhere! Who knows maybe one day it can produce the world record of 50+ lbs. Thats if the water depth can support a true monster!
