more engine help!!!
#1
I finally got the oil changed in the lower unit and found the loose screw causing my fuel problems, but am trying to figure out if I did a couple of things right. First is it possible to get too much oil in the lower unit of my 10 horse johnson. I just loosened the top plug and put the nozel in the bottom plug and pushed the oil in until it started coming around the threads on the top then screwed it back in and then removed the nozel from the bottom hole and quickly put the bottom plug back in and very little oil came back out les than 1/8th of a teaspoon. The second quiestion I have is when i am running the motor in a barrel and it has run for 5 minutes or so I put my hand back in the water coming out of the engine and it is quite hot. If I engage the transmission and run it for a minute or 2 it gets almost too hot for me to even keep my hand in. Is that normal? Do I need to get the motor serviced? If so where can I go that I won't get totally screwed on price,

[red] JB, I have a 1968 6 hp Johnson and I found out that it does not a pee hole like most motors. The water is blown out of the exhaust ports. So I think that in answer to your question, yes i believe that it is normal. [/red]
[red] Also check to see if you have a Thermostat, and check to see if it is working correctly. You can take it out and boil it . Hope this helps.[/red]

I have a Merc 150 with a temp gauge and when the temp gauge gets hot I can't keep my hand on the tell tell water spout its to hot. I know its time to replace the impeller. It's in the shop now being replaced for the 2nd or 3rd time in 20 years. How old is your motor have you ever had the impeller changed? I am not sure how hot smaller outboards run? The guy working on my boat seems to be really nice and fair I can't anything but good at this point. I wouldn't send you to the last shop I was working with very slow and costly. I can refer you to him after he has completed all the work on my boat if you would like if I am satisfied. I see that you like to do your own work you might look into changing the impeller yourself, I am not sure how difficult it is. Hopes this this helps you some Wes.

it sounds like you filled the oil up just fine, I normally take out the top screw and then fill until oil comes out of it, then put the top screw back in before I remove my filler hose, that helps keep the oil from leaking back out the bottom hole. not sure about the water temp, but the water should be just about the temp of the motor.

I am not sure when the impellar was last changed the motor was given to me by my uncle and he said that he had just spend 375 dollars to have it gone completely over so I am assuming they did that. The water spits out pretty good but i don't really have anything to compare it to to say one way or another if it is getting enough,

you also have to take into consideration that the water that is in that bucket is not a fresh cool supply.
every time it goes through the engine it gets heated up a little more and more.
I would check for a thermostat and if you havn't changed the impellor in a while go ahead and change it just for the sake of doing it.
