Going monofilament
#1
A fishing buddy of mine suggested going with monofilament but couldn't quite give me sound advice on what type. Any suggestions?

[cool][green]Hi there FishFiend and welcome to the BFT. Thanks for becoming a member. Any relationship to the JM naturalist?[Wink][/green]
[green]With reference to your question - what type of line material have you been using? Would think that just about everyone was/had been using mono. Now we have braided line material which is a different story.[/green]

Like Dryrod was saying, I figured about everyone starts out, and or uses Mono line. Regardless, the line you use is more so determined by what type of equipment you're using and what type of fish you're trying to catch.

Some people will swear by either one or the other, however, i've found that each type of line works better in different senario's. What are you fishing for, and i'll tell you my opinion as to what i'd use and why.[cool]

Oh.......... And welcome to BFT!!! It's nice to have a few more anglers "swimming" around the site! We look foward to seeing more inputs from you in the future! Have fun and good fishing!

I for one am a fan of Berkely Fireline. While fishing up in Canada, i had a large pike take my rapala and swim horizontal to the boat through a large clump of weeds, the weeds then rose because the line had sheared them off when the pike swam. Lots of people say good things about Fireline, like that its more sensitive which makes sense to me cause there is little to no stretching going on so you feel the strikes better or just the minute tapping because mono seems to stretch alot. Ive also heard rumors of it being tougher but i dont know what to believe yet.

I too use fireline and powerpro for most of my rods, but if I'm after fish like blues or stripers I'll use mono to get some stretch so as not to break the line while trolling.

when there is a shortage of reasons this leads one to beleive he has had positive results using mono... I prefer it my self, but in my defence I was weened on mono and have been using it for 40 years. alot of the cheep stuff to the expecive stuff.

I will try something new from time to time, meaning I will fill up a spare spool with it when I find time to mess around I will thow it on and give it a good work out. This is the reason I primarily use an open faced spinning reel, Quick line changes is no longer a problem.

when using bait casting or trolling reels I stick with the tryed and ture lines. should any of my newly tested lines make it to the list of trusted lines I will throw a back up refill in the box.

there are different types of mono, strech, non strech, non abrasive. all are good for thier spicific applications.....

if you find this answer confusing please feel free to inquire more about this subject, we will be happy to make you a pro at line selections and applications......

Thanks for the replies and thanks for the warm welcome. I went out and successfully tried the [#000000]Berkley Fireline on my last outing. Although the sucesses could also be thanks to my new spool Smile Thanks again
