ok guy's i'm asking you all what kind of fish you would rather fish for here in Utah.. a nonnative fish that dose not grow very good in the water it's in.. or maybe a native fish that has proven it's self in Utah waters..
or would you rather fish for a Hybrid such as Tiger trout or Splake. that have also proven it's self in the waters of utah?
Attached is some pic's of E-lakes Yellowstone cutt's and E-lakes rainbows.. and a pic of a bonneville cutt out of Joe's Valley..
Note the diffrenc in size and shape of the Bonneville cutt and the Rainbow compared to the yellowstone cutt's..

I say get rid of the splake! They are a worthless hybrid that does not make fishing for them worthwile. Any cutt is worth it. Still haven't caught a tiger trout.

I agree. Splake suck! I've never caught a decent one. Perhaps places like fish lake can benefit, but my heck, quit wasting money on those dumb little fish. I think the tigers grow very well, and they sure fight better.
Fuzzy that bonneville cutt is sweet! I think they have a good chance at making a strong comeback because the state wants to keep them off of the endangered species list! The bad part is that they would have to rotenone e-lake so there wouldn't be dilution of the gene pool with cross breeding. Sterile bows, plus the bonneville cutt would be awesome in there! Heck throw in some kokes and you've got a great combination! Just my 2 cents.

well let's not try and make it into another Strawberry!
the DWR had a perfect oppertunity to rotenone the lake when it was down 168 feet from spileway level 2 years ago.. that would have been the time to come clean and fix there mistake...
yes i said mistake!! what were they thinking bringing a nonnative cutthroat trout to a state that allready has 3 native spices of cutthroat trout?

It would be nice to pull something bigger than a anorexic cutt out of e-lake.Sure you can catch a big quantitie of fish there but sometimes bringing in a quality fish sure would be nice.Maybe they can put something big in there to eat those yellowstone cutts ]

you hit it right on the head Ocean ANOREXIC!! the fish in E-lake have looked that way from the first day they were put in and have never done very well in there..
but it's just been in the last 3 or 4 years that enough Rainbow's have made there way down from boulger res that now if your realy lucky to catch one you can realy see the diffrence in the 2 fish.. the cutt's just look Anorexic. where the rainbow's look big and fat.
there is no food Issue with the lake! there is so much food in that lake you can just walk up to it and see sworms of minnows everywhere. sworms of flying food and sworms of bugg's in the lake as well.. yet the yellowstone cutt's are Anorexic..
WHY?
this is what i would like the DWR to anser.. this is what WE pay them to do!
and i dont think they should need a shlub like me telling them to get off there back sides and find out whats wrong with the fish in this lake!
thay should allredy be on it. i can guarantee if the fish in Strawberry looked as bad as the fish in E-lake do the DWR would have 20 bioligest up there trying to find out why.
them fish have been in there for 30 years why are they in such bad shape?

[black]Hey fuzzyfisher,[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]Is that your motor home in the background of that photo ? If so, I think I have seen that thing up there at E-lake a lot of times. [/black]
[black][/black]
[black]I don't know. I've caught some really nice cutts up there - ones as big as those bows you have in the pictures. Actually, last year, I think I caught more large cutts there than large rainbows. Maybe it's how I was fishing or what I was using.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]As far as your poll goes, I personally think I would prefer to see native cutts more than imported ones. [/black]

Hey FishHound
do you have any idea how many times i have heard that same thing from other fishermen up there... but when it comes time for proof they all back pedal stamer some, and shout up.. or show me the same sickley 18" cutt's that i have been cathing for years there..
i catch on average 500 to 600 fish out of E-lake a year.. not braging just a fact.. i nore anyone i have ever fished with on that lake has ever cought a cutt out of there more than 3 lbs.. nore have i seen a cutt in there or the river that would by more than 3 lbs..
and i'm sure you have not cought a cutt up there fatter than ether of the rainbow in them pic's..
so here is your shot! show me your proof!
BTW yes that is my motor home.. i park it there from time to time..

I agree fuzzy, I grew up in carbon county and fished all those drainages for many years, even the creek where e-lake now lies before it was there. In all those years of yellowstone cuts, they've always been a cookie cutter 12-16" skinney not to great of fight fish. However fun it's been with a fly and bubble , I've always felt it has trophie size capability with a different fish. Yellowstone cuts (even in the yellowstone river in yellowstone park ) never grow that large, I don't see what the attraction is. I say put in some rainbow/w slot limit, tigers also. The joes valley cuts are the only native breed species to utah ' and what ones are there generally com from the abundunt population in upper seeley creek. (I have caught them up to 13lbs out of the upper hike in areas of seeley before a hugh mud slide nearly wiped out the stream in 1983, it's still trying to recover. That being said I don't think the joes valley pop should be messed with due to their dwindling numbers. But I'm all foer looking at alternatives in e-lake,and if that means destroying the dwr's precious yellowstone cuts , I for one don't care. Just my 2 cents worth Lonnie

I agree with you Fuzz.I have fished e-lake a lot since you introduced me to it a few years back.I have caught some cutts up to 18 inches but skinny!!! No fat on them whatsoever.I have caught some 12 inch bows that would outweigh a 18 inch cutt anyday.I always disect the stomachs and i have found 2-4 minnows in those cutts and you would think that the minnows would put some fat on them.

hey fuzzy- a couple of questions about joes valley.
i fished it over the 24th holiday and was a little disappointed. lots of small splake, cutts, and tigers. id say 90% were extremely skinny. a few were somewhat fat. trolling was slow, but vertical jigging anything tipped with chub meat was pretty quick fishing. early was best- when the sun hit the water the bite slowed down a lot. but, at least the skiing was great as usual!
we did some fishing for bait and i couldnt believe how many chubs we got! a few years ago all we caught for bait were suckers... up to 18 inches. this time we caught all chubs. some pretty big ones too. we took about 100 out and froze around 30 for future bait. hard to believe that the dwr took "80,000" out of there!
anyways, my question is- have you been catching any good sized splake out of there? do you think they'll reduce the chub numbers at all? seems to me that the lake is in worse shape now than a few years ago. whats your take? i dont fish it too much anymore, so im curious what you think, since you fish it a lot more than i do now.
thanks for the report, bkidder

Lonnie,
Not trying to disagree but I catch Yellowstone cutts over 7 lbs in a river in the park every year. They can grow big in the right environment. However in E-lake they are obviously a massive failure.

Hey Bkidder
this year has been worse at joe's valley than the last 3 years have been for me..
even with the DWR removeing 10 ton's of chub or around 80,000 of them.
and even with the splake, big cutt's, brown's, and even some big rainbows in there the lake is lossing the battle with the chub!
i have not even seen a albino in there for 3 years.. and for a long time it was kicking out albino's up to 10 lbs..
3 years ago i was catching splake 3 to 6 lbs 1 or 2 a trip..
last year i still cought them just not as many or as or as big.
this year i think we have only cought 3 fish in 7 trips over that were 3 lbs or better..
when you do hook a bigger one there they are very fat and healthy looking fish and look as if they are eating good..
i think the chub are just getting to big for the smaller fish to eat.

well i did to Don.. but i wanted the poll to be some what realaistic .. and i dont think the DWR would plant Mack's a lake in utah ever again.. that dont allredy have them in that is..
and to be far to the mack's they would eat that place out in about 5 years time and then starve to death soon after..
sure would be fun while it lasted tho!! [sly]

There you go again Lonnie, telling some more fish stories. If you provide a photo of the above claim, I will gladly eat my words. I have been fishing seely creek for over 25 years, even before the infamous mud slide and I have yet to see anything half as big as 13 lbs come out of there. There hasn't been a cut that big come out of Joes Valley in it's history. I'm starting to notice a pattern with your reports, maybe it has something to do with your age.
