Hi all... Need Striper help

Hello all

I am new to this forum, I can't believe I've never seen it before I am headed to Lake Powell on Sept 6-10, it is going to be my first trip to Lake Powell. I keep on reading about stripers, and was hoping I could get some pointers on striper fishing. I have never fished for stripers. Maybe someone could give me a link to a good article...
I have read all the fishing reports I have been able to find on Lake Powell, and everyone talks about using anchovies for bait. However they don't say what kind of rig they are using, hook size, or what .lb test they are using. Are we talking about anchovies straight out of a can? I was also curious as to what you throw at the boilers.
I will be fishing from a house boat, out of Wahweap. All the reports I have read have been dealing mainly with stripers, maybe someone could tell me a good place to boat some decent Large Mouths.
I was also wondering about my fishing license, I have a Utah fishing license do I need to get a Arizona license as well? I read somewhere about an Arizona license getting a Lake Powell Stamp is it the same for a Utah License? Thx to everyone in advance as you can tell I am completely clueless to striper fishing so any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as the Arizona license goes, you need to buy a reciprocal stamp to fish Lake Powell in Arizona boundaries.

[black][size 3]Get some frozen anchovies - form Sportsmans warehouse or a grocery store. While you are at Sportsmans warehouse pick up some anchovy hooks. They are deadly looking things with double hooks and a spear like thing where the eye should be - attached to that end is a small sharp thing that detaches when you skewer the anchovy - that is where you tie your line. To bait that hook, you spear the anchovy from behind with the sharp end and then hook the two barbed hooks toward the back of the anchovy. [/size][/black]

Welcome aboard![cool] This is what worked for me at powell. Buy about 10-15 bags of anchovies at sportsmans.And if your wife or girlfreind gives you permission grind up about 4 bags in a blender then freeze them.Get yourself a mesh bag its kinda like a small laundry bad with tiny holes and when you get to powell hang it on the side of your boat with the frozen ground up anchovies.This will create a chum slick and will bring the stripers to the boat.Use half and anchovie and freeline one and use different weights on other baits so you can see what depth they are coming in at.I usually drift unless you see boils.I have fished moki canyon and my fish finder kept going black with all the fish under the boat.You will also attract other species like walleyes,cats,and bass.Never hurts to throw jigs under the boat.Good luck and let us know how you did and post some pics if you can.Have a great time out there.[laugh]

[cool] First off, Welcome aboard. I am heading down there the 10-15. Fishhound and Ocean have summed it up pretty good. One Secret it to keep your anchovies as frozen as possible. It doesn't take much for them to get soft and then they wont stay on as well and worst off, They will stink everything up and you will be disliked by your friends and family for stinking things up.

Ocean's way with the blender idea is great. I have not personally used it but i am sure it would work great.

I have also used a 1/4 ounce plain jig head with a peice of chovie on it. I would personally by my chovies in Page at the Walmart where your going that way. I am going To bullfrog so I buy mine at the Hole in the rock store in Hanksville. Cheaper and fresher due to the turnover at the store.

Another good bet for the stripers are wally lures in the 1 1/2 size. You can get them in Roy at anglers den. If they have none you can go to the web site for wally lures and go through there. Also the same size in a all chrome Kastmaster will work great for throwing at the boils and jigging them up when you find them. Try the shaded area off the walls in the deeper water. 50-70 feet water temps have been in the 80s. So they have been down other than to boil.

My way of rigging them may be a little different but it sure seemed to work for me. Last year slayerace and I went down to powell and were catching 3 or 4 lb stripers constantly, but wanted to catch some big ones so just for the heck of it I rigged up a big 3 oz bullet head jig that I had made up for baracuda (blue on top chrome on bottom) and I put half an anchovy on it and dropped it straight to the bottom and brought it up until I hit the bottom of the school. For the next hour and a half All we pulled out were 25 plus inch stripers and they were coming out as fast as we could get baited and back to the bottom. Also I have had great luck on Tubedudes jigging spoons in chrome and blue casting them bast the boils or running them fast through the schools of stripers. Of course when they are boiling you can also catch them on zara spooks "walking the dog" good luck,

Wow, thx for all the fast and informative replies. Hellsanglers69 thx for the link that is just what I was looking for. Ocean thx for the chumming tips my wife already said no to chopping up anchovies in her blender, but she said I could buy a cheap blender from Walmart and use it. Ocean, whereabouts is moki canyon I haven’t been able to find a good map of Lake Powell. As I said I will be launching from Wahweap so if it is by the Bullfrog marina n/m because I do not plan on going that far north. There have been quite a few good reports from Last Chance Bay I think I will try that area first, that is if I can find it. All I know is it is between Buoys 46 & 28. If anyone has a link to a general map, or any kind of
map for that matter of Lake Powell I would appreciate it. I bet I can find a map or brochure of Lake Powell when I get down there. However I like to do my planning before I go so I can dedicate my time there to fishing. Is there a Sportsmans warehouse or any place to buy frozen anchovies near Page that you know of? Or should I buy some anchovies before I go.

Definitly go to Waynes Words as has been suggested. It is your one stop shop for all thing spertaining to Lake Powell fishing. Keep all the stripers you catch, they have too many! (nice problem, right?)

Moki canyon is just south of bullfrog.I guess you are coming from the south.A lot of fishing stores have maps of lake powell.As for anchovies if you can get them some other place than poweel it will be cheaper.I used to but them $1.50 a bag years ago.They probably gone up on price since then.You can also try mashing the anchovies but itd better in a blander because you get tiny little pieces that will float out of your chum bag and they fish smell it and taste it but cant really eat it .So they know food is around and they get hungry.[] This technique should work all over the lake.[cool]
