What's a fisherman to do?
#1
Sitting here in Heber, wind blowing/howling at times. On and off down pours, thunder and lightening chasing the dog under my feet. Knowing that getting on the water isn't going to happen today. My first full weekend in months! and I'm stuck in the house.

So what is a fishermen to do? I decided I'd make soms salsa and play with some fish recipes. The salsa is comming out pretty good. The 1st recipe, well lets say nasty tasting is too kind.

So what are the rest of you doing today?

This cold snap has gotten me thinking of ice fishing, so I respooled a couple of my ice reels with fresh line and cleaned out my ice fishing tackle box while listening to the football game. Bring on the ice!!!

- Tie more flies. 2000+ is not nearly enough, although Mrs. W2D thinks I'm eligible for some sort of 12-step program designed primarily for repeat offenders.

- Re- re- re- re- re-organize the boat tackle (8 boxes), the fly stuff (8 or 9 boxes), and the tackle necessities bag (a bottomless pit). Alphabetical is a popular choice, but I'm thinkin' spectrumized by subtle hues this year.

- Stare at the boat and dread winterizing the #$%&$# thing.

- Poke around in the aquarium. Mollies are scared to death of 8" plastic worms, although the cichlids will give it a go.

- Pick (or cut) out the massive backlash your buddy put in one of your baitcasters last trip - they all think it looks sooooo easy. Back to your Zebco, novice.

- Peruse the well-worn "Catalogues" - Bass Pro, Cabelas, Kaufmann's, Fly Shop... Unabashed Fish Porn.

- Watch the Saturday morning fishing shows on OLN. Even the crazies who can sit thru an entire televised golf tournament give you the nod for perseverence.

- Help the Missus with the housework. Wait a minute! Fishing in the rain and snow, half frozen and soaking wet, is a GOOD thing!!!

Our brilliant plan was to do a hike-in fishing trip to the Uintas. Although we have snowshoes, we decided to bag it as well. So went and spent money at Sportsman's Warehouse. And with weather like this, we asked, "Hey! Where's all the ice fishing gear?!?!"

I went to work.

I'd be fishing if I wasn't stuck here. I'll stop short of calling you guys a bunch of pansies or girlie men as that would be rude;0)

I took the family on a long promised trip to Lagoon today. Had great fun but it was as cold as a fishing trip would have been. I love ice fishing as much as anyone, but I am not ready for winter yet, and the fall softwater fishing is too good. Hopefully, a trip will be doable next week.

You picked the right time of the year to make salsa, the gardening is ending, the fresh vegies are ripe for the making of salsa, now is the time to create the unique salsas with the stuff you haven't figured out what to do with. Throw it all in a pot cook it up and jar that stuff making sure you taste it all the way to the canner and down a bag or two of chips as you go. Create an end of the year special salsa and forget the recipe because you'll never remember it anyway, and if its good you get to enjoy it and say to yourself look what I did, good job! This was always my favorite and busiest time and I'd put enough salsa to last the winter. I'd sacrafice a couple fall weekends to can enough for the rest of the year until the garden started up again. Practice makes perfect salsa....sort of. No batch is ever the same, but if you have a good baseline to start from then you'll go well.

[cool][#0000ff]Well, I have been off-line for a couple of days. Comcast crashed in my area. But, I did not waste my extra time...and I did find out how much extra time you have in a day if you can't play on the Internet. I been a pourin' and a paintin' up a storm...jig heads that is. Appropriate for the weather.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]First order of business is to check out Willard and Utah lake this next week, to see if those silly fishies realize it is fall now and that they need to feed a lot to get ready for winter. No more "wet" (waderless) fishing this year.[/#0000ff]

Wow I'm impressed you have an ice fishing tackle box? I use the same (basicly) things all years. They are just smaller in the winter. Hmmmm maybe thats why i don't do real well ice fishing.

Hey Fishcrazy maybe it's time to traget the Bows at the berry. They are big fat and aggresive this time of year. And they fight way better than most of the cutts. IMO

I thought so too FFM. So I whiped up a couple of batches. Saved some for the dippin bowl and moved on. The son comes home later that evening and sees the salsa and sez "so ya made some", trys it and pops of with it aint right. Sheesh what an ingrate! Then he makes his fried try iy and a bottle and a half later they wallow downstairs LOL.

Road,

Don't be too impressed. The tackle box that I'm referring to is a small 6-compartment plastic box for flies, just needed to make room in that box for more ice flies that I got for a $1 from Wal-mart, 10/flies per package. Can't help it if I'm a tackle-hound and looking forward to another season of ice fishing.
