Be extremely careful if you go to Huntington this week. I checked it out on Saturday and there was lots of open water in the middle of it and the thickest ice that I could find was only 1 1/2 inches thick. The center often has thin ice (especially just out from the dam) even when it is bitterly cold down there and there is safe ice on most of the reservoir. I was down there on 12/3/05 (air temp was probably below zero all the time we were there) when at least two guys fell through the ice (one poor soul fell through the ice twice in two different areas!), and I was fishing on at least 6 inches of ice. Also, be sure to wear some type of ice cleats. Last year on November 25th, while I was ice fishing down there a young lady was ice skating! Without wearing cleats I would have fallen several times. A good idea to wear your PFD while ice fishing, especially on early season and late season outings.

They might not last forever but they should do the trick. [/#505000] [#505000][/#505000] [#505000]I was there the same day at Kent, and I had some cleats. Walking was a breeze but the ice was so slick everytime I sat down me and my chair scooted backward about 3-4 feet. I imagine both Kent and I would have looked like a 1930's comedy on the ice without cleats. i dont meant to be tha brearer of bad news. but the valley temps down here in sanpete have not droped below the 40's for the last 4 night and this mornning it's 45* out there right now at 7:00 in the morrning.. that would make me think a lot more about how safe the ice would be up there right now.. i have seen ice go from safe to unsafe within the same day..
be safe out there if you go and where a pfd if it looks bad never go alone this time of year!! dont go on the ice together, let one go out first and test the ice. make sure you have a good rope with and a trust worthey friend to pull ya out if need be.. [shocked] [signature]

Where you been hiding Ron? Thanks for the heads up on the temps down there. I had wondered if this warm spell put the hurt on some ice. Guess I'll have to wait till next weeks cold snap to get the temps into a better range for ice formation.

Drove by Huntington today. The weather was warm, warm, warm! When we left Utah valley it was 60 degree's and in fairview it was still 45 and only 38 on top of the mountain. It did not get below freezing last night. Huntington has a large area of open water in the middle near the dam and another large area of open water on the near side about 75 yards north of the 1st turn out. Ice looked iffy at best. I did not venture out or drill any holes. I saw Bassrods arrive when I drove by and he was starting to drill a few holes about 10 feet from the bank straight out from the turn off. I don't know if he was able to get out on it to fish or not and he probably will not post his results on here since he commented to me that he didn't participate on BFT anymore. Maybe the info could be found on that "other" fishing board. If you are planning on going to Huntington in the next few days be very very careful!
