Otter Creek 1/1/07
#1
Billy and I made the long drive to Otter Creek. First time Billy had fished Otter Creek and the first time I had ice fished it. Fishing would be hot and furious for awhile and then slow way down and then repeat the cycle. We caught 53 rainbows (no other species were caught) and the largest was about 18 inches, and those are about as fat of fish as one is likely to catch anywhere in Utah waters. Caught fish in water from 9 to 15' deep, and wish that I would have also tried much shallower. The dreaded wind came up at 11:00 AM and it never let up the rest of the day. We fished from about 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Fun trip, but a long drive (3 hours one way).

We headed down the first road on the north end that appeared to go down to the reservoir. There were people about 1/2 mile south of us who looked liked they were driving out on the ice; however, some guys who were fishing near us said that the point there goes way out into the lake. The ice was at least 12" thick, so one probably would have been safe driving on it (as tempting as it is, I will keep my Suburban off of the ice). We fished tubes and similar style jigs up to about 2 inches long, small ice flies and I also caught several on a Gitzit. I tipped mostly with meal worms and wax worms and also used some PB. I tried tipping with crawlers and minnow, and got a few bites on these, but the fish seemed to prefer other baits. Smelly Jelly or other attractants seemed to also help. Yes, those are hard-fighting fish, and they also often slam the bait. Thanks for your suggestions.

Good to see you got down there Kent. Like I mentioned in another thread, we drove down to the area and spent the weekend. We caught our fair share also and most in the 17-18 inch range. I was a little disappoint in thats the general size. But here again I suppose I'm a little to use to OC of the old days..
We didnt night fish as we have in the past, the camper simply looked to inviting, but the shanty spent the night on the cap so we had something to do about 10am,, lol..

We were a mile or so south of you..

Yep, these were nice fish, but I also remember the bows that I caught as a teenager at Otter Creek.

Great report Kent, sounds like a fun day on the ice. That is a lot of fat bows, what was the smallest fish you caught?

Smallest was about 7 inches long. Most were 15 to 17" and all were fat.
