Happy New Year to everyone!
It is time to start looking forward to another great year of Youth Fishing Programs at an ever growing number of communities. Last year the Community Fisheries Program graduated 2500 youth through the 6 week program. We had roughly 250 volunteer mentors giving up their free time to share their expertize in fishing with kids who want nothing more than to learn how to fish and how to interact properly with the aquatic environment around them.
We will have several new clubs this coming spring in the following communities: Syracuse, Riverton, Herriman and perhaps Oquirrh Lake (South Jordan). This program works!! But we can only assist as many kids as we have great volunteers to do so.
If you are interested please contact me as soon as possible because we will be getting together with all the volunteers in February. The clubs start in April this year. A background check will be necessary. Your time counts towards Dedicated hunter hours.
Please contact Drew Cushing at 801-538-4774 or at [url "mailto:andrewcushing@utah.gov"]andrewcushing@utah.gov[/url]

Thanks!
On a side note! Salem City has run a great youth fishing program for the past 6 years and has had a very competent volunteer leader who has worked with myself and Salem City. The gentleman has decided to take cruise to Alaska during the program and so can't commit. If there is a person who lives in or around Salem, likes kids and is interested in assisting the youth of Salem, the other volunteers and myself please call or e-mail me and I will provide additional details.

Everyone who has helped or had their kids attend seem love it. I sent you a email and hope not only to be able to help this year but have my boy and maybe my daughter take the class. They always want to go fishing one more time.

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Drew, put us down again. We really enjoyed our participation last year at Bountiful.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]For those who have never done this, you should really think about it. It is not about sacrificing one evening a week for several weeks, it is about helping young people who might never get a chance to go fishing without the program. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There is no monetary reward, for being in the program, but you can't put a price on the personal rewards you feel when seeing the kids light up when they catch their first fish...or have tears in their eyes when the short program comes to a close.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]This program DOES make a difference...both for the kids and for the volunteers who jump in and help.[/#0000ff]

Well said Pat.
We need help at the Roy City Meadow Creek Pond again this year, as do the other ponds.
Please Call Drew and let him know that you are interested in helping. Don't forget that the time you volunteer can be applied to the Dedicated Hunter Program.
Call Drew for details.

[cool][#0000ff]We live in the southwestern part of the valley so anything would be closer than Bountiful was. Maybe Riverton?[/#0000ff]

Either Riverton or Herriman? Which would work best?

[cool][#0000ff]Make it easy on yourself. Wherever you have the most need, that's where we will go.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Kinda like the elderly lady on her deathbed. When her kids asked whether she wanted to be buried or cremated she said "Surprise me."[/#0000ff]

Pat I would love it if you would assist the youth of Herriman this year. The orientation will be on February 28th at 6:00pm. I believe this program would suit you well.
I look forward to seeing you again.

Thanks for the update Drew. I'll be helping the Ogden group again this year, I had a blast last year. It's real rewarding to see those kids faces when they catch a fish. Are we still going to be meeting at Glassmans pond? I heard that 21st pond was being cleaned up, it would be pretty cool to meet down there if they removed a few million carp. I think the problem with Glassmans pond is the space availability. Oh well, what's important is that the kids have fun. See ya soon

Hey Andrew, I met you at the dinner last year at Cabelas with my dad (who volunteers down in Salem). I am interested in volunteering in Orem.

I've read some of the reports and I think it sounds like a-lot of fun. Can't beat working with the kids. I live out in Herriman so let me know where you need the help. Herriman, Riverton, and So. Jordan are all close and I could do any one of them.
