To flash or not to flash...that is the question
#1
I've had success with and without one (like a Swedish Pimple, Kastmaster or even smaller thingy). I'm wondering if the interfere with soft hits (not FM 100[crazy]) that happen in winter, let's say when you use just an ice fly. OR is their attractiveness worth the extra weight they impose on your set ups?
Often, it seems that the more things you tie onto your line, the more the chance of knot failure. Do you use the same test leader as your line or at least a couple pounds lighter? Mine is usually 6# and 4#, respectively.
If you use them and use hooks on them, do you ever catch fish on them?

Thanks!

If I use an attractor, I use the same line for the leader as what I have on the reel. However I think I catch bigger fish without an attractor, I do think that an attractor can help catch more panfish and Kokes because of the extra flash.
Just my two cents!

I've used dodgers as flashers to attract fish and to make them think that another fish is chowing down. I think the added weight cancels it's self if the right rod is being used. If I put a 1/4 oz kastmaster on my light perch rod it bends the thing so far that I'm sure I do not see light bites. If I put the same castmaster on my medium rod I think it hepls to detect bites because it only slightly loads the rod, but keeps any slack out of the line.
6's. The real fun is in trying different things each day to find what is really working. By really working I mean the set-up that catches 5 fish to everybody elses 2, and sends you home with a limit in 1/2 the time of others fishing near you.

I wont fish without an attractor. My success rate is much higher with an attractor the last couple years.

I have never used an attractor...is the success rate that much more significant than without one? How far up do you tie the attractor?
(yes I'm still learning)

Anywhere from 6" to 2'.

thanks LH2, I've seen people use them. wasn't sure on the particulars.
do Kastmasters or Swedish Pimples make the best attractors?

I like Castmasters, more color options, perch, rainow, brown trout... Wider action, tangles more when using large jigging motions.
I like Thomas Phobe's too. Wobblers if I can get them, Available in the east and northern Great lakes areas.
Pimples have not evolved since the red flake near the hook.
Lots of others out there, any spoon will work.

I usually use the pimples. I have better luck with them. Kastmasters work good too and i use them often.

My catch rate has been at least three times higher since I started putting the "attractor" on the bottom. With the ice fly on top I see all the little bites. A polymer works great for this setup. I used to use pimples and kastmasters as the attractor but now use whatacrickets and little tough guys and catch about 3/10 fish on the bottom

I think alot of it depends on what you are using and what you are fishing for. Panfish, small trout, and kokes... I almost always use some kind of an attractor. If you are using small ice flies or jigs, it's almost a must just as weight.

When I fish the Berry, I rarely, if ever, use any type of attractor. I don't use ice flies up there often, and if I do, I use them on a drop shot rig with a larger jig. When I was there last time, a friend of mine used a kastmaster 16" above the jig and he was catching 1 to our 3, until he took it off. So I truley think there are times when it can be a downfall. In addition, I too like tying as few a knots as possible.... it can only make the setup weaker.

Then there are other times when it just doesn't matter.... fishing is so hot, the fish will take what they can get.

When i posted previous i didn't think about the berry and other "big" fish waters. I use tube jigs by themselves most of the time on those waters.

I tie mine between 6" to *8". No more. I tried going with a longer leader and it didn't do anything for my catch rate. I use a poor man's Kastmaster in the silver color. I use the 1/16 oz size.

[cool]I agree. When I fish with Larger jigs, Example the bear, The berry, Etc I dont use an attractor, However for the smaller slimers and for the pan fish I always use the small kastmaster as attractors/weight to get down. I have tried the needle fish and some other smaller lures as attractors that are lighter weight when I use a bobber stop for pan fish and they work good for that.

My 2 cents is that it is like most other techniques. Sometimes the fish won't touch the bait without one and sometimes they won't touch it with one. When i was at rockport the other day the fish would go straight for the flasher and then go down and sample the bait so in that case it at least got them in the area.
