Mantua & Bountiful Lake 01-06-07
#1
Family plans changed at the last minute, so I was able to do a short solo fishing trip. Hit Mantua at first light in 19' of water, more or less, straight out from the ramp. Wind started to blow almost immediately, which made it difficult to detect those soft bites. The hard wind lasted about 1 1/2 hours and then it calmed down to a slight breeze and light snow. Fortunately, two 13" large mouth bass hooked themselves. I got some more extremely light bites and lots of followers in the next couple hours. There was a teenager out there with his younger brother. Both of them had no gloves and were wearing gym shoes. I told them that they were nuts and the oldest one said that they would be fine because they waded in the water at Bear Lake! They didn't last very long. Met DKSRenagade and chatted with him awhile. He was still fishing when I left and had caught a couple small perch. Talked to several others on the way off (including another BFTer, whose name escapes me right now something43) and everyone was having about the same luck, lots of lookers and a few soft bites. Stopped by Smith and Edwards and bought me some of those Maniac Ice Cut'r plastics and can't wait to give them a try this Tuesday on Strawberry. Bought several other items that I don't need. Stopped by Bountiful Lake for about an hour. Drilled lots of holes in 3 1/2 inch ice and got a few followers but no bites. Got a chuckle when I read a sign there that gave information on rainbow trout. The sign said that "the adults grow up to 15 inches and weigh up to 50 pounds." It sure would be fun to catch a 50 pound 15" rainbow trout![Smile]

[cool][b][#0000ff]Using your weight computation tables, did you work it backward to figure what the girth would be on a 15 inch, 50 pound rainbow. THAT would be a FOOTBALL.

Kent, it was good to meet you today. I just wish that the weather and the bite would have been better.
It was so cold today that my radio wouldn't work.
I picked up several more very small perch and a 16" Rainbow before the wind came back in full force, and blew me back to my truck.
I hope to be at Strawberry this comming Saturday for my first trip there sense it iced over.

I think that it would be closer to a BASKETBALL.

Kent if I would have known you guys were there, I would have looked for you.
I fished over on the north side of the gnoll, hoping that would help cut the wind down. All I know is that it was damn cold. It was windy when we got there, then calmed for a bit, and then the wind came up again hard and strong. Coldest day on the ice I've ever had.
I finally left at about 1:30, would've left earlier but I was with a friend who drove and he wanted to stay longer.
Only 2 'Bows to show for it! My friend's kid caught a decent largie though.

I would have enjoyed meeting you. I have fished in much worse and I never got cold, but it was impossible to tell those light bites with that wind raging.

Yes, even with a strike indicator that Geoff gave me last winter, it was still hard to detect those light bites.

Love those chartruese glow-wermz- they seem to be the best jig I have ever used at Mantua.

Might try Porcupine next weekend.

Still enjoying that Porta-bote?

It was good to meet you today Kent. After you left the wind died down before coming back with force. After I talked to you I caught another LM Bass and a huge perch. We ended up with 2 perch, 2 LM Bass, and one rainbow. We also hooked into some bluegill but never landed them. We never would have made it without the QuickFish 3 today. That wind was pure evil.

Kent- I wondered if there were any BFT members there today besides our group with the Scouts. I tried channel 12 but all I could hear were a bunch of young kids playing on the radio. We were fishing on the north end of the people by the boat launch area. Aaron and Mark showed up to help me with the Scout group. We had more leaders than boys show up. Our fishing was like yours. I had several hits that I missed. Lots of lookers on the Vexilars but not many takers. I enjoyed learning more about the Vexilars. My fish finder battery pooped out and wouldn't work even though I charged it yesterday. It must be time to get a new battery. When the wind kicked up at noon we said adios to everyone and headed home. Acey

"Still enjoying that Porta-bote?" No, this time of year it is just in the way in my shed.

I thought the latest and greatest channel was 7-0, so I called out on that a few times. I saw your crowd over there, but didn't see many boys, so I assumed (bad assumption) that it wasn't you with your troop. I almost wandered over and said hi on the way out, but instead said howdy to a few of the folks (including Cowboy 43) who were fishing south of you.
