Gorge - Lost Dog
#1
Been fishing for slimers the last couple of days at Lost Dog. Caught 22 yesterday and 18 today. Kept a limit of 18 - 20 bows each day. Also caught a couple of small macs each day. Fished with the 1 1/2 tube jigs tipped with mealworm again, approx. 20 feet of water. I talked to the game warden today and he said the best place for ling is around Firehole so tomorrow I'll head there and try for ling. The guys fishing deep for macs are catching an occasional ling at Lost Dog also. I hear from the folks at work that Boysen is hot for perch right now. Also, a swarm of folks went out to Ocean last weekend and got in the area of 60 walleye some ling and some perch. They had around 60 - 70 tip ups going and fished for two days and nights.

Sound like some fun days at the Gorge, I'm also interested in how the wind was today up there. We were planning on heading up there today but the cameras they have on the roads there were showing snow packed roads and high winds were predicted. Sounds like we missed out. Looking forward to that report on the burbot. WH2

If you know where Boysen Res. is , it is to the west of there . Lost Dog is a code name for a secret fishing hole . [Tongue] Wyoming slang , got to love it !!

Lost dog isn't wyoming slang for a secert fishing hole. There is actually a road with a big sign that will take you to lost dog.If a person takes this road ,it will bring them to the north side of where the blacks fork enters the gorge,Nothing secret about that.

I think Randy was just kidding but for the guys that don't watch the board often, it might as well be a secret fishing hole for all they know[Wink]. I guess I just watch this site too much but it does annoy me when people don't pay attention but hey that's just me[unsure]. WH2

I hate to be say too much here but if you will notice the title of the post "Gorge-Lost Dog", that is the body of water. For those of you that don't know, Gorge is short for Flaming Gorge[Wink]. WH2

Lost dog, firehole and ocean are all secret spots. Lurkers beware, they are code for Echo, Pineview and Rockport.

The wind "hic-cupped" for a while on Sunday, so my son and I took a drive up to Buckboard. The ice that once stretched from Buckboard all the way around the Great Bend had blown off. There is still about 5 inches around the marina. There were about 10 groups of anglers in that locale, but it looked pretty slow. We drove some roads to the north, heading upstream to find some better ice, away from open water. We stopped about a mile north of Buckboard and found about 7-9 inches of clear ice. As soon as we started punching holes the wind picked back up, and I would guess it was gusting around 30 mph. We fished about 4 hours, moving around a lot. My son landed 3 whopper-sized rainbows (15.5-20 inches), fishing around 15 ft over 50-60ft of depth. He was using a 1/4 oz. curly tailed glow jig, tipped with meal worm. I spent more time on the bottom, searching for lakers without any success. The wind made bite determination a big pain. It's windy again today, some of the meters in Rock Springs are showing gusts around 60mph!

Looks like we're having fun now!

Ocean Lake and Boysen are near Riverton, Wyoming. Just like to keep you folks posted, occasionally people make the trip from Utah.

Thanks for all the detailed information Ryno. I wonder if anyone was fishing that area when the ice blew off[unsure], I sure hope not. That ice North of Buckboard was thicker around the confluence, hopefully it isn't blowing off with all this wind. Has your son or you ever caught any kokanee while fishing for rainbows?

I stopped in the marina store while I was at Buckboard on Sunday, and spoke with Loretta. They haven't had to do any rescues this year, but they do have a laundry list of stories regarding ice fishermen to tell. All she said on Sunday is "Those guys are crazy! There's still soft spots out there!". I can understand her reluctance after seeing so many accidents, but I'm pretty sure the ice was good. Personally, I like to be as far from open water as possible, thats why we headed further uplake.

We actually haven't caught any kokanee, but we haven't really been geared for them. When we would fish the kokes through ice at Causey Res., we downsized with a icefly under a attractor. I haven't tried that on FGR, but I have seen some fish come through suspended that reminded me of the kokes on Causey. Maybe I should have a pole rigged and ready to drop down when I see some indication on the graph.
