[black]Hey Guys, TubeDude and myself are going to put a rod building class together. here's the planed date, time and place.[/black]
date: 1-23-07
time: 6:30/7:00 pm until when every.
place: TubeDudes place.
If you plan on attending you most PM TubeDude for dircetions.
the first session will cover all the componets and for those who would like to build a rod we can get all the pieces set up and order them our find them in town. or if you already have the componets.
them when everyone has their stuff we can schedule another class to assemble them. then on to the wrapping, and if you would like to do some of the fancy wraps or weaves I can help with that. here's a couple of rods I did, one cross wrap and one weave. they do take a long time, like 15 hours or more.
let us know if you are interested.
later chuck

[cool][#0000ff]I have a large heated garage with plenty of overhead lighting and some tables. Also have a limited number of chairs (8-10). I need to know ASAP how many want to show up.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As Chuck suggested, this session will be mostly for covering the different components necessary for building rods and how they go together. We will demo some simple wraps to show the basics on that.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I just got blanks and components for building two rods for a couple of young family members. I can demo how to set everything up and initial assembly.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have also recently built some more ice rods and have several "specialty" rods for show and tell. I'm sure that Chuck will bring along samples of his handiwork too. You should be able to get a pretty good feel for what you can do and what it will take.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Since everybody has a different idea of what they want to build, and how they want to do it...and different levels of skill and coordination...everything after the first session will really be personalized assistance. Some things we can do in followup group sessions. Other things you will do on your own time and then bring in your rods for questions or special steps. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Wrapping rods is easy. You can whack out a simple wrapping job in a couple of hours. But, the preparation, handle assembly, spining, guide placement, custom wraps and fancy trim jobs all add to the time. And, the final clear coat takes several hours to cure.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I am working on a "write up" for rod wrapping that will include simple explanations of all the components and how they go together. That will be one of the things we hand out for anybody who shows up at the first session. After that, you can decide how far you want to take it.[/#0000ff]

[#002850]I won't be attending the class this time but if I could I sure would like to build a custom ice rod.
I have a rod wrapping jig that you all are more than welcome to keep and use during the classes. I would be glad to drop it off at TubeDude's place.[/#002850]

I already made me one rod about 20 years ago and wouldn't mind making a few others, and especially I want to know how to do wraps for repairing rods and attaching spring bobbers.

[cool][#0000ff]Basic "wrapology" is something most anglers should learn, even if they never build a rod from scratch.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I first became exposed to the essentials of wrapping guides as a kid. I had an uncle that did his own rod repairs. One winter he was replacing a couple of guides on his beloved bamboo fly rod and I was enchanted as I watched him lovingly lay down the turns of thread perfectly in place and then whip finish it to absolute smoothness. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]He has been gone a lot of years, but there are many times when I am winding a rod that the memory of his early demonstration wanders back into my consciousness.[/#0000ff]

[black]This is the coolest thing I have ever heard on a forum before.[/black]
[black]You guys could get a TOP OF THE LINE pole or rod for a fraction of the cost, let alone personalize it. TD, and utwalleye, you guys rock![/black]
[black]We got to see step by steps on this![cool][/black]

[cool][#0000ff]We are probably not going to be building a fly rod in class, unless someone wants to. Can do. I will be making a 6 1/2 foot spinning rod for quick demo purposes, but we can make anything anyone wants...flyrod, baitcasting, ice rod, mack jigger or whatever.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In the writeup I am finishing, I do include "step by step" instructions. However, it WOULD be a good idea to use my digital and shoot some pics for future reference.[/#0000ff]

I so want to attend, but some cop thought I should get a ticket and now I've got driving school that night. I will see if I can re-schedule my class, if so, I will attend.

[cool][#0000ff]No problem. So far we have about 8 "lookee lou's" (students) and two "windbags" (instructors).[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We should be able to handle a few more with no problems. I have a 3 car garage, and even though I got a lotta junk inside there is plenty of room for my three folding tables and some chairs.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We have a couple of folks who have offered to bring treats or refreshments. That would be nice. Will post a more or less final head count on Monday the 22'nd for anyone who needs that for planning.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If I am able to score some perch between now and then, I might even whup up a big batch of Pig Out Chowder.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Since the first session is mostly basic show and tell, we can handle more people. Once we get into individual rod building, we will need to limit the number for each session. But, anybody who wants to build a rod will be welcome and I can be flexible for some small get togethers.[/#0000ff]

I think that I would like to be included in the Lookie Lou's catagory. I aquired a small 4 wt. fly rod blank last year. I intended to catch & smoke some weber whitefish this winter. I built a wrapper dryer, but have not done much except locate the spline and put the cork on. If you will pm the address, I'll be there bearing treats, barring a snow storm that evening. Thanks for all you do for this site.
[#ff0000]PM Directions on the way. You will be welcome under any pretext, especially if you bring goodies. [/#ff0000]

I think I better sign up for this session also. Like I don't have enough stuff for the Mrs to trip over. Ahhh but she loves me.

[cool][#0000ff]Directions on the way by PM. Just don't bring a mess of mangled perch for me to finish filleting for you.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That makes about 10 "students". Can probably handle another one or two without overdoing.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]First session will be mostly show and tell, but other sessions will be individual rod building. This will be a good place to see the basics...for rod repairs or for deciding whether you want to build something yourself.[/#0000ff]
