Balmy Pineview 1-9-07
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Got TubeBabe out on the ice for her first '07 trip. Had to work to convince her that she couldn't bring the tube though. She's a trooper but she still grumbled a lot about having to drag her own ice sled. As you will see in the picture, I thought it best to keep a ways ahead of her.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We hit the ice from the "swim beach" area, a half mile past where I usually get down to the water. My personal opinion is that it is easier to launch off the road by the caretaker's home. Much shorter distance to the water and not any steeper. It was a killer coming back in after the warm weather had slushed or melted the snow. My sled weighs a bunch with the 3 horse power auger.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Air temp was about 20, with no W when we went out at 7:30 AM. Had ice in the holes most of the morning, but by 11 or so it was almost shirt sleeve weather. Lots of sun and really comfy. I dosed with sunscreen but still got pink cheeks.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We worked toward the narrows, drilling and dipping in several areas. Saw only a few fish on sonar and had only one light bite in three stops. About two inches of snow on top of 6" of hard ice. The snow was slippery and without cleats I got in some ice skating practice until the snow slushed up a bit later in the morning. The snow will probably be crusty or even gone before the next dump on Thursday.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Stopped to fish the point on the north side of the opening to the narrows about 9. Punched holes from shallow to deep. No fish on sonar until about 50 feet. Quite a few fish in the 55 foot depths, from the bottom to ten feet up. They all had their little mouths firmly shut. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]TubeBabe finally scored the first fish, a 8 inch perch, about 9:15. I iced one about the same size a few minutes later. Then, noticing a few fish coming through off the bottom, I raised my jigs and hooked a nice crappie. I thought it might turn on, but other than a couple of other perch, nothing more from those holes.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]About 11 we headed across the narrows to the south side of the channel. That has been productive for larger perch and we were after perch for some chowder fixins. Again, I "swiss cheesed" an area that has produced in the past. TubeBabe followed me with her trusty ice rod, dipping into each new hole. On the third hole out from the shore she went bendo and iced a nice perch. Game on, I thought. Not so.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]While we munched sandwiches and enjoyed the radiant heat of a low hanging noon sun, we did occasionally coax a bite from the perchies. We managed to collect enough for some chowder in the tropical sunshine. About 2, the fish disappeared from sonar and we started backtracking on our way home. Stopped at the holes off the point and caught another half dozen perch. I iced a second crappie and we started the long laborious trudge back to the car about 3.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Got to "walkie talkie" with Tlspyder13 and DKSRenegade. They were fishin uplake. They both reported perch action, but no crappies. I think the tigers keep the crappies deep in Pineview. DKS reported that in the area he fished, off Cemetery Point, that the deepest water he could find was 25 feet, but that he had pretty fair action on perch all morning. He said he caught his larger ones in the afternoon. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]At least the perch are scattered around the lake. As folks find other good spots that should help take some pressure off the narrows. I am sure that the pressure has been responsible for the decreased bite most anglers have noticed. Everybody is seeing more fish on sonar than on their lines.[/#0000ff]

Don't you hate it when you have to work for those fish!? [Tongue]

Nice report and pics as usual.

In addition to the perch and crappie there are:

Tiger Musky
Large and smallmouth bass
blue gill
carp
catfish
a few trout

I may be missing 1 or 2. [Smile]

[cool][#0000ff]There are also a few green sunfish, but the predators have pretty well thinned them out. Used to be able to count on catching a lot of the fiesty little buggers on larger lures being fished for other species.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Also, during the summer, you can find wacko waverunners, stupid skiers, pesky powerboaters, and bodacious bikinis. If you are in a floattube or other small craft, you will probably see more of these than fish. Fish do not coexist well with the more obnoxious human species.[/#0000ff]

[#000000]And that is exactly why I love fishing the ice season rather than fighting the crowds during the summer. One can only put up with so many ignorant water-skiiers, waverunners, etc... before going completely insane Smile[/#000000]

[cool]Nice report, TD. Question for you though: Is the caretakers house on the North side of the Narrows then (or just past the narrows on the NORTH side) or the South side? Just curious as to where exactly that access point is. I think I'm either heading there on Monday or else Pelican again. Not sure which yet, but if I go to the pine, then we'll fish off the boat ramp on the North Side or Cemetary point. Can't wait to catch a big ol mess o perch. Catching my first crappie ever wouldn't hurt either. That's why I'm leaning more towards the pine...

To bad the bikini's don't come out on the ice. It would make it a much warmer day. hehe

[cool][#0000ff]The subject house is the first structure(s) you will see on the left (north) after you cross the dam to the north side of the lake. Limited parking on the south side of the road. A couple of different ways to get down to the water, via steep paths.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You are not likely to catch crappies in water shallower than about 50 feet at this time of year. After the end of April they will be all over in the brushy shallows..."getting married".[/#0000ff]

Sounds like some fun Pat. Looks like you coached plenty of little perchies onto the deck.

Not a big fan a fish chowder though....when I was in Florida, a nice lady invited us for a "fish chowder" lunch as it was. Come to find out, she ground up the WHOLE fish in a blender, guts/bones,scales and all, and then made up a soup. Worst stuff I've ever eaten! So I am permanently scarred from any type of fish chowder, even if it is good. But I'll eat those little buggers cooked up just about any other way.

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah, well I have had a lot of "negative" experiences with the medical profession too. But, I'm not too scarred...or too proud...to still go fishing with the likes of you.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We all have our personal aversions and dislikes. Most of them can be traced back to negative experiences. Funny, but no matter how well we understand them, and the reasons for them, and the sometimes silliness of them, it is tough to talk outselves out of them once we have them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Not sure I understand all that. Hope you do.[/#0000ff]

Was shirt weather if you would have got out of those dark narrows TubeDude. I spent most of the day with just a long sleeve tshirt. Was nice to talk with you and DKSRenegade on the radios even if we never met up with anyone.

Fished with Out4aFloat and his girlfriend just off the beaches and had a fun day. Started catching fish in about 50 ft of water. They landed 13 perch and I got 26. Nothing like having both of your poles going crazy and nothing on theirs. Had that happen three times landing a perch on each pole.

Only one small perch until we talked with DKS the first time. Each time we asked a new question TubeDude or DKSRenegade had great advice and our catch rate went up. We did much better after talking to the pros and putting their advice to work. Will do much better next time and maybe even find one of those crappie's.

[cool]Yeah, but Brandon, this choweder is called "Pigout Perch Chowder" for a reason. It has BACON in it. Bacon makes EVERYTHING taste better...

Tlspyder13, it was nice talking to you on the radio.
I like to have the radios for the reason that you just stated.
You can give information back and forth one the ice, which can make a poor day of fishing much better.
I was going to fish on Friday instead of Tuesday, but with the weather reports, I think that I made a very wise choice in switching.
You just couldn't have asked for better weather than we had.
