[black]The cisco spawning run is now underway and the lake is frozen! As of Friday, January 19, 2007 limits of cisco were being dipnetted off of Cisco Beach and Utah State Park marina. The ice off the Bear Lake State Park is approximately 5-6” thick and ice anglers are reporting catching some nice cutthroat trout and a few whitefish directly in front of the marina and off the new rockpiles just north of the marina in about 35 feet of water using jigs and spoons tipped with cisco or wax worms. The ice along Cisco Beach is now about 3” thick and anglers are dipping fish while standing on the ice. Closer to shore is better for dipping cisco. There have been a couple of 4 wheelers and a few ice anglers off the Ideal Beach rockpile. Cisco can be jigged (snagged) off the rockpiles by using lures such as castmasters and spoons. [black]Remember a person may not possess a multipoint hook with a weight permanently or rigidly attached directly to the shank or a weight suspended below any hook unless the hook is on an unweighted dropper line that is at least three inches long.[/black] This is to prevent other fish, such a whitefish and cutthroat trout from being inadvertently snagged. Any fish that is foul hooked other than a cisco must be immediately released. A few ice anglers have been fishing off the east side from the pump house north towards Second Point and the ice in this area is about 3-4” thick. Remember to watch out for springs and or methane vents which make or weak ice in some area and keep some areas wide open. Play it safe and wear a set of ice picks around your neck on the outside of your clothing. The picks will help you to pull yourself out of the water if you should fall through. It is also a good idea to keep a length of rope with your ice fishing equipment as an additional safety measure. The lake level is at 5910.56 feet. The lake has risen approximately seven inches since October and continues to rise. The deicers in the marina have been turned off for the year and it is now frozen. There is approximately 4” of snow on the ground at this time and night time temperatures have been below zero with day time highs of about 15 degrees.[/black][black] The latest fishing report is available on line at:[/black] http://www.wildlife.utah.gov/hotspots/detailed.php?id=1

ok help an idiot out... I am assuming that the cisco run is fairly unique... does this mean that you can go up to bear lake and catch a ton of fish... if so do you fish like you would for other fish??/ sounds fun I have never done it before or even heard of it... please explain ... thanks

Cisco are an endimic (spelling??) species found only at bear lake utah. They are kind of like a fresh water smelt if you ever fished salt water.

Many fishing folk use them as bait tipped on jigs and there are a few of us that actually enjoy eating them! I am one of those that are torn between both worlds, I can eat 10 plus in a single sitting but feel guilty afterwords for eating my bait. LOL

Deep fried in a secret batter will knock your socks off!!

OH wait I meant to say that they are horrible and the cutts and macks have all died off, bear lake is nothing but a cold PWC body of water with sailboats and skiers galor. You all better hit strawberry if you want to catch fish.

Heres a couple posts I dug up out of the archives from a couple years ago. It will give you a good idea how it is done.

So do you think it will be safe to take a 4 year old out to catch some cisco on the ice Saturday morning (1/20)? She has been wanting me to take her for awhile now and this would be a good way to get her hooked on fishing. I think it was 2004 I went and the ice was only about 2 or 3 inches but it seemed safe enough. What will be the projected ice depth on Saturday do you think?

I would NEVER say the ice is "safe" on Bear Lake no matter how thick it is. (Due to springs/methane vents, etc.) With that said, I will have my kids out ice fishing this weekend. You could jig (snag) cisco off the rockpile at Ideal Beach or off the rockpiles north of the marina or you could dip net them off Cisco Beach or off the marina in Garden City.

Yesterday (Thursday) about 2:00 I drove up the East side of the Bear. Several folks were at Cisco Beach dipping nets through the ice. My friend and I stopped and walked down to visit and check out the results they were having. The Cisco were coming through pretty fair but not real hot. When I got to the Casa I picked up the dip net and took my friend back to get his fair share (I have plenty left over from last year). We arrived in time to dip for about the last hour of daylight. It was pretty slow at that time of day.

Please do not post any more reports on Bearlake. I live 40 minutes away and am stuck working[mad]

That is my favorite place to fish and its hard to beat dip netting for cisco; especially with ice!

fish1on .... I hope you don't mind if I add a little info that I didn't see in your post.

It is the Bonneville Cisco that is endemic to Bear Lake. Cisco can be found in many other places.
