anyone fishing pelican lake
#1
[Smile] hey I have'nt made it to pelican lake this year, but I'm wanting to get down there soon. I was wondering if anyone has been out on there. If so how thick is the ice and how is the fishing right now. I sure can't wait to get on the ice for some catch and release fun. I sure love to catch those big bluegills and largemouths.
any information would be greatly apprecitated.
good luck fishin trfishin

[cool]Hit Pelican yesterday on MLK day, and can you say C-C-C-C-COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn, it was blustery -27 when we rolled through Roosevelt at 6:45. Too freakin' cold for my blood, but we ice fished it anyway, 'cause we didn't drive all that way for nothin'. Breath was freezing to my beard it was so cold, and my face literally hurt from walking in the breeze from exposure. Anyhooters, we were tired and freezing our butts off after walking out, so we didn't go to all the way to our favorite spot yet. Drilled holes there at only 7 feet deep. Started getting bites pretty consistently after getting the shelter set up and heater goin'. Caught about 6 gils there each over the next two hours or so with lots of missed bites. Some gils were dinks, and some were Standard Pelican regulars (7 inchers or so and nice round pancakes).

At about 10:00 or so we headed out to my favorite spot and my friend had a brand new finder so we had to let him use that, but I wasn't familiar with it yet (Huminbird 565) and neither was he, but eventually we found out that the 'gils in this area for the most part were hugging the bottom (like the perch do this time of year at other lakes) and it was hard to the finder to pick that up even though it was only 10 feet deep. Anyway, after a while, we started getting bit and ended the day at 3:00 when it had warmed up to a nice -5. We both caught about 15-20 gils and had a great time, despite the nasty coldness. Wasn't as fast and furious as my last trip on the 26th but it was a lot of fun, nonetheless, and just what my shrink ordered for domestic problem stress relief...

[Smile]hey out4trout thanks for the report. I'm glad to see that you guys caught some fish and had a good time. I think that it is supposed warm up pretty soon. How thick is the ice as of now and how were the edges. Did you need a board to get on and off the ice. thanks again trfishin

[cool]No board necessary, and the ice was like 14 inches thick where we first drilled our holes, and then the other places were about 9 inches or so...Didn't get any largies this trip, but they were probably out in deeper water...

-27? I admire your...gumption. About 50 degrees colder than I'm happy with. How did your rods & reels hold up under those conditions? Were you using spinning or casting reels?

[cool]Spinning, and you know that little switch behind the reel to make that you switch from reeling forwards to backwards? Well, that little brake that makes it so it DOESN'T spin backwards didn't work because of how cold it was, so I had to hold my line when setting the hook to make sure that it didn't spin backwards really fast. Might be permenantly broke. it's still too cold outside to know...Also, it was stiffer than normal when reeling...
