What type of fish can you not throw back

When you're out on the ocean or in the inlet, what fish is just so good on the plate that you can't throw it back; it has to go in the cooler.

Mmmm, as far as the saltwater species go, I've never thrown back a keeper flounder. I also don't think i've ever thrown back a keeper spanish mackerel either, or a keeper cobia. Mmmm, I guess there are alot of salty species that are just too good to let go. [cool]

All flounder have a home in my freezer as well as stripers. Blues get filleted and given away.

Move the eyes to the other side of the head and you get the Halibut that we have.

I have never thrown back a legal Halibut.[cool]

There is a difference in the Pacific Halibut and the California Halibut.

This summer alone, my son and I caught only 42 (legal size)California Halibut. The weights varied from 30 to 54 lbs.

My son had the 54 lb which was only 2 lbs shy of the state record.

The typical Pacific Halibut which are most common in Alaska, are the ones that tip the scales at over 300 lbs. That is alot of table fare.[shocked]

LOL, still a monster compared to a regular flounder. If you get a five or six pounder, that's a beast. The largest i've ever seen was a 10 pounder, what I like to call a "door mat." The largest flounder i've ever caught was 6 pounds 7 ounces. I still hold the record for second largest flounder caught on Myrtle Beach State Park Pier. I'm pretty sure Summer flounder are the largest, and I think the world record isn't much more than around 11 or 12 pounds. Maybe Gregg will jump in on this one, he's the inshore master. []

Our Halibut have to be a minimum of 22inches in length to keep them. That puts them right around the 15lb mark.

I'm going on a Halibut run tomorrow. Got an invite from one of my Skipper buddies. We will also be fishing a Halibut Tournament in Marina Del Rey in April.
