Flaming Gorge Conditions
#1
I finally took the jump and became a registered user after I have been lurking for so long. I have enjoyed the board and the reports, this is a great site and a good bunch of people.
I have a question to ask anybody who has been to the Gorge recently.
I am inquiring about the ice conditions around the edges. Is it safe to take an ATV or snowmobile or will I have to throw a piece of wood or plank to get across? I also heard that the ATV's have to be registered in Wyo. where could I pick up a sticker in Green River? Also a recip. stamp?
This will be my first time up there ice fishing, we are actually going to target Burbot, have to do our part to save the smallmouth, Kokes, and other fish, I also understand they make excellent table fare.
I have been reading a lot of articles on how to catch them and what type of structure to fish but that only scratches the surface, these have only been general tips, if anybody has any advice it would be appreciated (I did read the other posts below).
We will be coming up on the 17th and most likely be fishing around Buckboard area unless there is a better spot that somebody wants to share with me.
The Gorge is a great place to be, sure would hate to see it decline because of an illegal planting.

Thank you

Scott

Welcome to the BFT site . I fished the Gorge saturday at Anvil Draw and the ice was 9" and Buckboard was 18" . I see no problem with wheelers except to be careful of pressure ridges . Edges were good . Fished Buckboard for a short time saturday night but didn't hook any burbot . Seem to be lots of people there this weekend . Fish the rocky shore line for burbot should get you a few if you keep at it . Last week it was 20 to 40' for burbot . Macks are anywhere from the surface to 90' . I caught a 18" mack on a rat finkee with waxie on 2# line to boot down about 15' in case a bow or koke was coming around .

Welcome to the site Quakflak, Hellsangler had a good report on the burbot from last weekend. He caught 13, fishing by the ramp at buckboard. As far as using your ATV this coming weekend on the Wyoming side you might be out of luck. I got this info from one of BLM's recent post.
"To purchase a Wyoming Offroad Vehicle Permit or Snowmobile Permit, you can only purchase them over the phone, 877-996-7275 or over the internet at the link above. [#ff0000]The permits are no longer sold through state wide outlets.[/#ff0000]

[black]They say that you should expect to wait two weeks for delivery and a copy of your purchase conformation is not a substitute for the sticker on your machine. You can be ticketed.[/black]

I called a couple years ago and was told.
The charge for wheelers and SM's is because we able to use them other places in Wy. besides the pond. There is no extra permit needed for a boat on FG.

Don is right, no charge for boats, but given time that could change.
Looks like we are headed up there this weekend, what area are you fishing this weekend? or have your plans changed.

That is nice to know . I seen some a-hole dump some oil on the ice at Anvil last weekend . I wonder if the forest service would go clean it up if I notified them where . I would of but had nothing to get it with . I was almost tempted to pour some fuel out with it to ignite it to burn it off but felt I would be in trouble if I did .
