I have never heard of a Burbot before a few weeks ago. They truly have a unique look to them.

How do you fish for them? And are they anywhere else besides Flaming Gorge?

Wow , I didn't realize that the Burbot had such a large overtaking in the Gorge. That's kind of scarey.

They are mostly in the Wyoming end of the Gorge at Lost Dog or Fire Hole. They only bite at night. The bigger fish are in 30 to 40 feet of water and the smaller fish seem to be in 2 to 25 feet of water. Drill a lot of holes and move around. Use a glowing jig tipped with sucker meat. They seem to like night crawlers too. Recharge your jig often and keep it moving.

The Gorge is the only lake in Utah that has them and hopefully it will stay that way.

We cooked some up and they are a very fine textured, mild flavored white meated fish. Pretty tasty.

Not alot of branches in the Burbot family tree... [crazy]

But then again many fish-oholics I know also come from a strong family pole... PB [cool]

[cool][#0000ff]Nice score, John. Welcome to the board.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Mind sharing some info? What part of the lake? What time of day? Depth? Lures/baits?[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]No doubt about it, those homely suckers are there to stay. But, I personally predict that they will become a popular species with the Utah anglers. Not much of a battle, but they are unique and they are great eating. Always a good "plan B" for frustrated mackaholics.[/#0000ff]

Caught these at Lost Dog. Had the best luck between 2 and 5 am. BTW - they were full of crawdads (and an occasional rock) but the biggest one had an 8" lake trout in it's stomach.

The biggest ones were about 22" and about 2 pounds. Where did you catch them in Montana?

Congrats on a good catch. Looks like you really put the hurt on them. I've got to find some time to go try for those ugly fish since they are supposed to taste soooo good.

I go out there every year in the spring for smallies, several times, at the Confluence (Wyo.) If anyone could tell me how to catch these guys while tubing there I'd sure like to try. I'm sure they eat good and it would help the fishery, right? This from a carp eater.[Wink]
By the way - fillet em good post, appreciate it.[Smile]

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Leaky, lets plan a couple of days during smallie time and we will also target some burbot. They will be in the same rocky areas feeding on the same crawdads.[/#0000ff]

We caught a bunch of those ugly fish two weeks ago on Cut'r Bugs in glow. They seem to like the deeper water and bite better early morning and late eavening or in the dark.
They really didn't seem that tasty to me, i think they will just end up Crawfish food when I catch them. Maybe they would make good Catfish bait?
Good luck on those nasty critters Leaky, Kill the Burbot Not the Big Bass!!![cool]
