#1
My dad and i were planning a trip to lake powell next week. I was wondering if anyone has been recently. I know its a bit early for the strippers but our schedule is to busy and next week is about the only time we can go. we are thinkink of going to the bullfrog side, but if anyone thinks its better somewhere else that would be great. Also was curious of some spicific jigs, lures or bait that has worked at this time, and some spicific locations on of where to go.. We really want to catch some stripers but any other kind of fish would be good too. I have only been there a few times so im not real fimiliar with the lake. Any advice or help would be awsome.. Thanks guys for all the help i have got on this board i love it..

You need to buy some anchovies and take them with you. Since you can chum at powell i suggest you do. I would grind some up and put them in a mesh bag and start a chum slick. If you drift fish for strippers that would bring them your boat and keep them there. I use a third of an anchovie and freeline it out. I am sure there are powell experts out there to give you more help good luck and i am jealous!! [Tongue]

I've only been to bullfrog. There is primative camping at Stanton Cove, a camp ground near the store launch ramp, a RV park with full hookups, Family Mobile home Rentals and a Lodge with a great restraunt and reasonable priced rooms with balconys, small reefers and a microwave.
There is a big boat launch, a small boat launch area, a fuel dock, convienece store with fuel and bait and a clinic. At the marina you can rent a slip, a boat, or a houseboat.

For fishing stripers, chum them as said above. When you get one on, play it a while, it gets a frenzy going. If your father hooks up, land your fish and throw out again. You can actually work the whole school to the boat waiting for the next chunk of anchovie to be thrown out. I rig all the rods I have so that I can just grab another rod if one gets messed up. I keep one rod riged with an chrome castmaster to dropp below the school where the big ones hang out.
I replace the treble hook with a single hook to save my hands when removing the hook.

At night fish for Cats on the sandy beaches up from the marina and off the vvacant dock areas for stripers and crappie. Use small glow jigs under a bobber for the crappie and fish deep for the stripers with more anchovies, again drape the chum bag, jiggle it often.
Plan on a bag of anchovies per person per day. Use your thawed and older ones for chum, use the fresher frozen ones for bait.
I rig with a single, medium to large, split shot with a single 2/0 circle hook for my anchovie rig. With circle hooks you don't set the hook, you just start reeling in. The fish is almost always hooked in the corner of the mouth and the hook is easy to remove, so you can get another one.

Check out wayneswords.com for up to the day reports.

I went to Powell last week, Wed, Thur, Fri. It was a quick trip, I camped at bullfrog, took my canoe and had a blast! Had pretty good luck with the smallies at the two small islands opposite shore from bullfrog. I was using a Texas rigged pumpkin colored worm bouncing down the slopes of the islands. Did some fishing off the docks as well and caught a few walleye on a silver cast master while I was waiting for the striper's to take my anchovies. Ended the trip with about a dozen smallies, 2 walleye and 20 or so striper. I didn't fish the entire time but had fun. The Stipers were a bit skinny however one guy did have two that went close to 10lbs.

We are headed down with the boat first weekend in May so let me know how you do and where you did it.

Good luck!

SW on 72 South is easy off, Easy on, Plenty of parking. You can't count on them at hanksville, but you could call Offshore Marine or the Bullfrog convience store to see if they have them before heading down. That would be ideal. Thawed chovies fall apart fast. stil frozen is best and they don't stay that way on ice.

When I was down last week Hanksville had them and the convience store @ bullfrog had them as well. Just know that the store is only open till 5

I dedicate one old cooler to nothing but anchovies. I put two blocks of Dry ice in it and get the chovies in Hanksville. Cheapest place I have found yet. Hole in the rock store.

If your fishing from the docks at night, Try Oceans Idea with the chum bag. tie it on some line and drop it down, Should really help. Take your green submergible light and your battery and that helps from your own boat.

[#005028]Thanks....I knew I could count on you guys.....One more question.....Do they rent overnight boat slips at Wahweap, and if so, how much are they?......My buddy has a big patio boat and it might be more convenient to leave it in the water, than pull it back and forth to a motel.[/#005028]

I am sure that they do. Availibility could be the only problem. Weekends start getting busy down there and tournaments if one is going on. But i think you could get one

A year ago I was in Bullfrog and we tried to fish at night by the docks. I thought there were signs posted that said "No Fishing" on the docks. If you know of a place that allows it, I would love to know. We tried fishing from shore by the fuel docks and caught 1 walleye and 1 striper. Let me know where you can fish from the docks. That would be better than where we fished. Thanks

WW: They do rent slips and were about $20 per day last year. If you have limited time and fish within a boat ride from there (and there are plenty of good spots) I've found it to be well worth it.

If you are planning to fish up-lake a ways an alternative may be to launch at Antelope Marina. It is just east of Page and saves a fair distance and saves from driving through the "Maytag Straights" area where wave action from passing large boats can really get nasty.

Good luck and we will await your report! I'll be there in early May and look forward to some decent striper and smallmouth fishing.

I agree with Troll www.wayneswords.com is an invaluable resource. There is a board you can post questions to and the 'wordlings' are more that happy to help! 2005 was my first trip ever to Powell, My first morning fishing for stripers I caught 14 stripers in 45 minutes all 5 lbs and larger! I have been down 7 times since. Each time the fishing was amazing. We have great success on Stripers, SMB, LMB and catch the occasional crappie, catfish and walleye. Enjoy! And remember to keep all the stripers you catch! The lake is overpopulated and harvesting is the only way to keep the population in check!

There are security guards at night at one of the places that will kick you out. But you can go over to the other ones and you can get on them. I wouil have to verify from a friend who was down there a week ago

At Bullfrog, you can fish on the uncovered "slips". Last weekend, we spoke to the kind security guard and he said it was ok to fish anywhere that was uncovered on the docks. I guess its not too busy this time of year so he may have been nice and let us fish. Just make sure you clean up when you're done. Making a mess could possible take away this privledge. Good luck!
