I took my 5 year old out to Locomotive springs and he had a blast. At 5 years old he baited his own hook, cast the line, set the hook and cranked them in. He has been my fishing buddy for the last 2 years and is coming a long nicely. He ended up keep a few because of the late hook set( I think the fish had digested the bait and returned it to the lake already[blush]), but he hooked. My boy helped gut and cut them and prep them for the smoker. When it comes time he will make the brine and smoke them with me. He is very excited about the whole process, and I think he is getting a good lesson out of taking game and recreation and turning it into food and seeing wildlife is a precious commodity and should not be wasted or abused.

Man, I can't wait for that day to come! My boy is only 5 months, so I've got a little while. Like yourself I plan on raising some great fishermen and women. [cool]

You shouldn't teach your kids to smoke! You guys will look funny holding up a huge home rolled trout.
That's good to see your taking him out with you. As you know I take my son alot also. I have not got him to bait his own hook yet, but he is wanting to clean a fish pretty badly. I'm just not so sure about letting him have the knife.

Well Trav he did his share of the gutting with a butter knife that he found. I did let him pull out the guts and fling them around a little. When we got home he took to the Fillet knife for the head and tale with close supervision.

Take I 15 North to I 84 West and go past Snowville towards Park Valley and Kelton. It is a dirt road after a bit but a nice one, maybe 55 mph. You can also take the Corrine Exit and head west turning south at Promontory, Golden spike and follow the signs out that way. Map quest will give you driving directions

Those pics sure bring back memories for me. Those were sure some fun days watching my 5 kids learn to enjoy hunting and fishing. I donated enough lures fly's and equipment to open a small sporting goods store, but those smoles were always worth it. And I believe their gaining such a love for hunting and fishing helps keep them out of trouble during the vulnerable teenage years. And the icing is , they grow up, get good jobs in different parts of the country, buy nice boats, and most important , they always invite the old man along (and usually at their expence) So those patiant hours for you durring their youth will pay hugh dividends.
