Powell Weekend! With Pics
#1
Just got back from Powell last night and had a great time. Went with my girlfriend and her son, despite the not so good looking forcast we went anyway and it was a beautiful weekend with awesome weather and NO CROWDS even the bass tounament was no problem...
We started out Friday afternoon and got to Bullfrog with enough time to set up camp across the bay and get out for a little Striper fishing (no strippers in sight! I think I got some bad info or they went back to Vegas) pulled into Crappie Cove and Gabe caught his first Striper right off the bat using a small white grub. then they were gone and so were we.
Slep in Friday a little bit and headed out for Moki wall, hit the small cove on the north end and marked a school in about 28 feet and the fish finder was black with fish, we dropped anchovies and started knocking the crap out of them, nothing big but lots of fun for a new fisherman. Finally the school moved out and so did we. Headed back with a coulple Stripers for lunch and had fish tacos at camp, Yeah I've been waiting all winter for that! After lunch we headed out for some bass fishing by camp. I started out with a Strike King copper colored tube jig toward the shore on a shallow flat and picked up a really nice smallie right off the bat, then another then a large mouth then another, anyway it went on like that for a while and it was awesome! Moved down the shore to a cove with lots of reeds and brush, perfect looking topwater spot and I just happened to have a top water popper hooked up... First cast Bam! Nice largie, angeled down the cove pitched it to the edge of the reeds, Bam again! another largie, did it again other side of the reeds got another! did it again farther down got another... Ok I'm in heaven right now I've been dreaming of this all freakin winter and it's happening, Gabe is having fun just watching and netting the fish and me... well I'm doing just fine. Wore that hole out and moved farther down working points with the tube jig picking up a couple more smallies, then back to the cove for one more top water bass that I missed last go round. Then back to the flats for another little while picked up more largies and smallies. Back to camp for dinner and sleep.
Next morning started out on the flats with a lucky craft ghost minnow 110, first cast hooked up with a nice large and i think I picked up another, then switched to a green Sinko over the brush, two in a row! One large wrapped himself around the tamarisk and broke off. Move on fishing points and picking up a large and small, back to the cove, no top water joy... back to the flats with the Sinko picked up another large, Gabe caught a nice Striper on a silver and black X rap, I drifted over where I caught the largie that broke off and there he is still wrapped up in the brush, I dipped the net in there and picked him up! Got my Sinko back and let him go a little tired probably.

Monday started out with the Lucky Craft by camp and caught a striper switched to the Sinko and picked up another large moved down the bank pitching the lucky craft and things are slowing down, I think I really beat these fish up and the tournament probably put a little hurt on too. The bass were getting really spooky everywhere had a few hits and picked up one or two more and Gabe picked up another striper on the X rap. Started wrapping things up switched to a green Yammamoto Grub on an orange head and caught my last Smallie... Sad to see it end, packed up camp and bugged out.

All of the largies were 16-17 inches 2.5 pounds plus or minus... smallies about 16" with the smallest around 13"

We had an awesome time! the weather was perfect. the lake was calm as you could ever hope for, no other campers, great company, excellent fishing... It just hardly gets any better than that!

WOOHOO!!!

[blue]Check out Wayneswords.com! This next week may be the best for bass! As soon as the cold front passes the bass will be back on their beds the fishing is Hot. [/blue]
[blue][/blue]
[#0000ff]With the water around 58 degrees and warming, the bass are spawning and the stripers are hunting for shad! Because the water is still cool the stripers can hunt throughout the full water column. [/#0000ff]

You wouldn't happen to be the guy in the 17' tracker with a 40 or 50 hp merc on it would ya?

We talked to a lady and a youngster in this boat on Sunday while we were waiting to load up. We offered her a battery and she said we was about 10 minutes to late and that one was purchased at the marina. We were sick when we heard on the cost. I can't believe they could do that to guy down there. We had a extra in our boat. My buddy wouldn't even want a dime for it. He's hell of a guy that just wants to help a guy or gal out when he can.

If this was you it's weird because I'm thinking what are the odds of this? Weird stuff. We fished Moki Canyon also. In fact we offered the young duffer on board a place to go, we barely got Mo out of our mouth and he was like oh ya Moki Wall and in the canyon, it was cool. He was on it for sure.

I'm gonna post my report up when I get some pics sent to me.

Wow that's weird... yeah that was us... thanks for the offer unfortunatley our timing was a bit off. Yeah it hurts to pay that much but it's a deep cycle and I'll use the snot out of it, and we had such a good time that it took alot of the sting out of it and I wasn't going to let something like that ruin our time together no way. I had such a good time down there, man I've been looking forward to that since October, what a wonderful place!
The youngster Gabe had alot of fun and it was his first time there, he really is a bright kid, and is catching on to the whole fishing thing. I took him to Strawberry last fall and caught his first fish then we went ice fishing several times this winter and he even out fished me a time or two. Fishing is a really good thing for kids to do, especially these days with kids spending so much time on the computer and video games, it's such a good thing to get them doing something "real", anyway he had a great time and so did my girl friend it was her first time at Powell, although she dosen't appreciate fishing as much as I do she had a great time hiking around and just being able to relax and read.
Well I wish I could have met you there and thanks for thinking about us and chatting with them a bit.

Cheers

Well have a good time! I wish I could be going back down, My buddy is going next week too. I'm sure the fishing will be incredible! My next trip probably won't be until May for a tournament. I'm hitting Sand Hollow and Quail Creek in a couple weeks, that should be good, they have some fat old bass there.

Cool! Hope you guys have a good one.

[Smile] Just got myself from powell, Hadn't been down in 19 years. Seen Crankem at marina at willard north and almost convinced him to follow us. we fished out of Antelope Fri. Sat. Sun. Mon.A.M. then had to weld my buddies hull on his houseboat for him. What a storm on SatA.M. Then sun came out and now can remember why i hung out there when chasing gils in school. the fish were great. My big brother brought a 6#7oz smallie home to mount and the largemouth went crazy on jigs on stand-uo heads. walleyes though i couldn't find. we caught stripers in 12" of water to 30" but not good #s. I caught a big Blugill in Last chance bay, what great fun. I'll for sure go back. Watch for the mountain range at the mouth of Warm Springs though ' Stay just a bit to right of center. scared the crap out us!!! There are mountains were water once lived. And also don't be afaid to throw 1/4oz roadrunners in chart. all the fish in Powell love em. Feel bad about no Eyes but lets just keep that tween us.Good Luck , Trollem34 P.S. Don't worry about losing your wife just don't lose your wifes fish in the net!!!!!!
