Utah Lake 'eyes

Has anybody caught any walleye out of UL this year? I will be out Friday afternoon and again on Sunday, just looking for a general area where the 'eyes have been caught. I have friends that have heard of fish caught but no hard proof. Hard to believe someone would fib about a fish [], and don't get me going on taxidermists[]

Wish i could help on the eyes, but i can't even find them around my house. Haven't heard of any anywhere.

You should try looking in the water rather than around your house []. Although, I haven't found them in the water myself....

LOL! Last year at willard or no, the year before last i slayed them on the west dike. But that is not the case this year.

Yes walleyes are biting right now, done seen it myself! Try Provo boat harbor in the AM, catching on a green curly tail grub with an orange head and tail, casting along the jetty on the south side, the part running north south, catching is pretty good when the wind picks up a touch, around 10:00 am. I could be shot for divulging this info but you seem like a nice young man and I'm sure you won't tell anyone else[]

One thing that makes a big difference is that we, here in Utah, don't have the abundance of eyes that they do in the midwest. Just about the time you think that you have them figured out, they prove to you that you are just a being lucky.[/size][/black]

[size 3]I remember one spring, fishing the area around bird island at UL. Slow trolling with crank baits, right behind the boat, almost in the prop wash of my kicker. We couldn't keep them of the hook. Several trips that spring with the same results, best fishing ever for eyes. Several attempts after that spring to duplicate the results produced nothing. go figure.[/size]

[size 3]I have learned a few tricks that have helped me. When trolling (any type of bait/lure) I always find myself trolling too fast. It seems that walleyes like slow speeds, and it seems to help to pull forward and drop back your rod tip as you troll.[/size]

[size 3]They say that walleyes are very spooky fish, and it takes the use of planner boards to keep your baits away from the boat. But, I have found, mostly at Willard, that having the bait right behind the boat, almost vertical, seems to produce well. (That's during normal water levels, trolling as close to the dikes as possible).[/size]

[size 3]Now if I could only figure out how to catch a wiper. Those babies have totally eluded me, have made several attempts, but have yet to even have a hookup.[/size]

Go catch wipers in the summer evenings in normal water conditions just north of the north marina in the willows right around and after sunset, (be patient) they come in there chasing or pushing the shad and boil all over the place, throw a topwater plug to them and hang on to your pole baby!
I suppose they'll do something similar this year.
Also I know it sounds crazy but troll a shad rap at about 4 to 5 mph around where they are during the day and you get some good reaction bites and it must look like you're pulling a waterskier. It's embarrasing until your're catching fish then it's fun as hell!

I can confirm this report from the same area. A reputable source reported to me he has caught 6 walleyes the past two nights from shore on 3-inch curly-tail grubs and 4-inch Husky Jerk minnows. He said you must reel in very slowly to get a bite. Never did get fish weights from him.

Were are you planning on fishing?I need to chase some eyes to. Some of these reports sound good but last year it was a totally different story. I didnt catch any eyes except at willard.I need to break the toon out this year maybe i will swing by lincoln friday depending on how late i work.

W801, my buddy Dan gave me the same report word for word! I'll be in the boat and explore on Friday afternoon and hit it hard Sunday. I'll try the harbors and B. Island see what I find, I hate Utah Lake, catch a few big walleye and I'm hooked for life. The fishing changes every year, but you can always count on the carp being there.

Majja Matt and I went to Provo Harbor earlier tonight (Thursday) and brought home the striped kitty! We were fishing the south jetty near the bend. We fished from an hour before dark til 9:30ish. We saw a few walleyes, cats, and bass, but not many! Each of us had a bait rod out and we also tossed plastics and rattle traps. Not a scratch for either of us. I figured we would've at least nailed a carp or mudcat! Needless to say, we left very frustrated! Not to mention the two A-holes that fished RIGHT NEXT to us (15-20 ft.) even though there was plenty of space for them to spread out away from us! I shoulda cussed them out but I held my ! Anyways, I think we might've been too early. The moon had not yet risen when we left around 10pm.

Guess we just have to put our time in at this lake before the fish gods favorably upon us!
