Maiden Voyage w/ Murphy at Willard 4/3/07
#1
[#0000ff]I had Murphy right in my back pocket on this trip ! Tuesday afternoon I took off work to meet Old Coot and Bait Caster at Willard for some fishing and the Maiden Voyage of the boat I bought from Fish1on. When I bought the boat I knew the motor didn’t work so I took it up to Lee’s in Hyrum to have him get it running, when I picked it up it ran (still had starting problems), and was stuck in forward, so I spent all winter working on the lower end rebuilding it and got it working. I thought hey maybe before I leave the house I should see if the motor will give me any starting problems. Guess what,,, it wont start, easy enough it was just a bad ground wire on the points, fixed that and it starts. Well I got to the Willard north marina about 2:45pm met the guys and they backed me down to the water, Guess what,,, it wont start, The guys said we’re going out just come meet us out there when you get it started, OK no problem, hahahaha. So I run the battery down dang it ! I thought ok I can fix this I have a second battery in my truck and it’s a marine battery, I might just get to try this boat out. Well I had taken the winch strap off the boat but still had the safety cable hooked on the boat. So I got in the truck and started back up the ramp and bang ! crash ! I looked back and the boat decided it’s going in the water with or with out me, it’s sliding down the ramp on it’s own without the trailer, OH S*!#... I jumped out of the truck and ran after the boat, it saw me coming, eyes bulging, face red, steam blowing out of my ears, so she stopped after only about 15 or 20 feet. The safety cable failed. Luckily the motor was raised and no damage, the hull had very little damage, great fiberglass job Pat !! Now I backed the trailer up to the stupid thing laying on the ramp like a giant beached Willard Bay Carp, Thanks again to the guys that helped me get the boat back on the trailer ! Now I’m back in the parking lot and got the batteries swapped and backed back down to the water, I tried to start it and.. you know it, it wont start. After some more tinkering it starts I get it in the water and it works !!! it’s now about 4:30. So now I’m driving around looking for the guys and finally found them, they’re trolling, fishing, having a good ole time so I thought I’d like to try trolling, I slow to a stop get rigged up, cast a line out and the D@%* thing dies! Guess what,,, it wont start, again !!!! I reel in my line put that stuff away and finally get the thing started and it’s barley running, so then I headed back so I wouldn’t have to spend the night on the water. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Now I get to rebuild the Carburetors, fuel system, and maybe points.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Moral of the story… [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]never take Murphy fishing.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Sorry about no pictures (or fish), I was to busy fighting with Murphy and his cousins and brothers, and …….[/#0000ff]

I've had trips like that! But don't worry, all it takes to fix the problem is time and money.[laugh]

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing.  Then I retired.  Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

[black]MNSHO, old boats suck unless you're willing to open your pocket book. What you save on the purchase price and payments of a newer one, you make up with repair bills. The frustration level is worth a lot not to have to deal with. Seems like once you solve one problem another one springs up. Well, I guess that applies to all boats. I wouldn't be without a boat but, man, they definitely try you![/black]

[black]Another observation I've made is 90% of people working on their own motors have no business popping the cowling. Let a professional do what he does best. It doesn't save you much cash but the frustration level is tolerable.[/black]

Man Oh Man when I read the subject line, I thought Oh no what happened!

Sorry to hear your maiden voyage wasn't a better one but in due time you will be cruising the lakes in style.

Me personnally, I like the older boats. The vintage look is way cool, but yes they do drain your wallet. Hang in there, she will be a sweet ride.

Reminds me of my maiden voyage (which also was on Willard) on my second boat (I am on my third one). My story had not being able to keep either outboard running, and it also included being blown into the rocks, right on top of some bank anglers, and a near disaster with my outboard coming in contact with the prop of an angler's boat, who stopped to rescue me. The pleasures of owning a boat![pirate]

[black]Well, you know the description of a boat:[/black]

It's a metal, wood, or glass hole in the water into which you throw money.

I think Murphy is a permanent passenger on all boats.
