Fishin for Kokanee
#1
Since I will be laid up for most of the rest of the good Mack fishing this year, I was looking at taking up fishing for Kokanee. This is one fish that I have never targeted and the only ones I have caught were on accident while trolling for bows. So I was wondering what everyones favorite method was (Jigging or Trolling)? I am not wanting specifics on exact methods, lures or techniques (I'll figure that our on my own) I'm just looking for what type of fishing you prefer to use and why.

Thanks

Kokes eat are plankton eaters and are very aggressive. I prefer to use a downrigger or leaded line to get the lure to the level where the plankton are. In the morning the plankton are on top and as the sun rises and the temp warms up they move deeper to about 40-60 feet in the summer time it seems like.

Good luck,
Jeff

[black]Hey Wyobraz,[/black]

Not being an expert on catching kokanee at the Gorge, I can only offer the few things that I have learned over the years.

Kokanee seen to react to lures that are flor. orange better than most.

I would troll with mono., because of their tender mouth, you need a little give to the line.

Jigging has only worked for me during the in lake spawning period. For that, I have most success using a "buzz bomb" when you have located the fish, and your electronics are totally black with fish.

It may sound strange, but I think that the most productive lure for me, using downriggers, has been mid-sized rapalas, painted with glow-in-the-dark craft paint.
It may not have anything to do with the glowing effect, as they turn out white in appearance.

There are some real experts on kokanee here in the forum, some even produce and sell the lures that will work.

Ya I have seen the boats get all stacked up bumper to bumper trying to stay on top of them. But if you could stay over them for awhile I imagine it could be a blast especially if you was by yourself.

Trolling I agree "yawn" but with a bum back I might have to give in get some adult beverages make the wife drive the boat and get a suntan. LOL

Check your PM's

Ya thanks guys I have known about Shasta Tackle and Rocky Mountain tackle for awhile I even have some of their stuff (unused though). I will figure it out if it kills me I like a good challenge.

But with that said I was just courious which way eveyone likes to fish for the Kokes. Those of you that troll do you like it because its easier to catch fish or is it a little more challenging? Do you troll because you like to kick back relax and listen to some tunes?
For those that jig do you like it because it also is more challenging or does it seem to be a more intense way to fish for them.

Just like the people that fish for Macks some will live by trolling and some will live by jigging. Why is this? Everyone has there reasons I'm just trying to see what thos reasons are.
Thanks

I like to troll. Sometimes it is just relaxing other times I catch a lot of fish.[Wink]

Hey Wyobraz,

I think that if you are serious about catching kokanee, you have to troll for them. I hate trolling, and do so only for fish that I consider good table fare. Kokanee and walleye are the only fish that I troll for, and that is mainly because that's the best way to catch them on a consistent basis.

Best of everything on your back operation. Just because you don't have fishing reports to post, don't let that stop you from keeping us informed on how you are doing.

I usually boat camp at the Gorge for 4-7 days at a time. My wife and I are on the go probably from 6am to 6pm everyday. With the price of gas nowadays, I find it's much cheaper to troll around. 6 gallons can last me 2 days trolling. The fact that my wife loves to have a koke fillet everynight while makes it critical that I find the kokes. Now trolling is always challenging, lots of variables. Starting with where are they today? I've been in an area where most of the boats were catching fish and we weren't, and the opposite. Take your supply of weapons and spend the day on the beautiful Gorge figuring out what works. Also, I love my Sirius Radio on the boat. It helps drown out the trolling motor noise. Sometimes the kokes bite to AC DC sometimes it's Elvis.

AC/DC Huh? Now thats the best fishing tip I have ever heard! If they like AC/DC I have my fair share of that but I am a little short on the Elvis stuff. LOL

I will be hangin out bothering you guys during the back surg. This place will probably be my only source of sanity for a few week following. This kind on info is exactly what I was looking for and I am enjoying the reply.

Thanks everyone

I have always had better luck trolling for kokes. I usually go with triple teasers, needlefish, and humdingers. The stuff from rocky mountain looks really good too. The key is definitely finding them. I don't know about jigging a glow in the dark rapala but I guess that could work too. Good luck!

Trolling for the kokes is very effective do to the fact that it is easier to locate them when you can cover so much more water surface. Next is figuring out what they want that day. Spring, Fall, Deep shallow Sunny day cloudy day all play a factor. Good luck however you get after them.
