The one that got away
#1
Had a fun outing yesterday afternoon/evening with a new tube convert here in Nebraski. He is a long time fisherman, but new convert to the church of the tube....funny how a small batch of us floating around on little 20 acre lakes for a few years (more years for OBG - or "TubeDude East" as myself and Fishheiser have been known to call him) can do for the sales dept at the local tube store [Smile]

Some would say we were crazy to head out in 98 degree temps at 5 PM....But it beats work by a mile. Plus, when you are not retired or unemployed, your fishing chances are limited...so best to take what you can.

The bite was slow for the first little while, I had only caught a couple of small (really small) crappie....Alex was doing a bit better on the bass an gills. However, as it got later I finally had a decent 20" cat surrender to me on my "emergency - don't get skunked pole" that was floating a green night crawler under a bobber while I was pretending to jig fish with my 7' "do get skunked" pole on the other side of the tube.

The real excitement came about 15 minutes later when I started bringing in what I thought was another eater cat. I soon found out that this was no eater cat....It dragged me in circles, made runs that yanked 4-5' of drag at a time, and just had it's way with me for quite a while. Every time I would get it close to net, it would make another run...even when I dared tighten the drag a bit. I got it close enough to see my bobber about 4 times (for a split second) -- but alas....my 6 lb line decided that it had all that it could take (or it could have been me getting a little greedy with the drag settings as I reached for my net....errrr..) and SNAP! Oh well, at least now I have this years "the one that got away story".

Had a great time fishing with another Nebraska tube convert....and look forward to trying again in the near future.

Too bad about the big guy that got away. Maybe it was just a huge carp... [Tongue]

[cool][#0000ff]Good story...but you either have to get better line or set your drag better...or both. Fish do not break lines. Fishermen do.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]TubeBabe and I have an undestanding. If you lose a fish on the way to the tube, that is a "professional release" and the fish can be whatever species you want...and whatever size you can get away with.[/#0000ff]

It was 6" line....and I think that the fisherman had something to do with it Smile I had the drag set just fine (at first), but after about 15 minutes of playing "your place your mine" with him....I got a little greedy....No doubt I could have landed him on the 6" just fine if I had been a little more patient..........However, it did light a fire and I have had more "happy thoughts" about getting back out there for round 2....than I do on days where they all end up on my stripping apron.

After having a spring with tons of mudcats and dink bass -- I decided to respool all of the line on my medium-light action poles with 6" ....I do have a big fat cat pole in the garage gathering dust -- but I am sure if I take that out that I will again get into the bullhead that don't even put a bendo on it and I only find about when I reel in to check my bait Smile

[cool][#0000ff]I agree with your basic philosophy. I would rather have more fun with more fish...and risk losing the occasional big fish on light tackle...than to fish heavy and not get much sport from the smaller fish.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I use mostly six pound line too...Silver Thread Excalibur. I have landed fish over 30 pounds on it and have never had a fish break it. I always use good reels with good drags...properly set. And, I learned a long time ago that most fish are lost because of impatient anglers. We just gotta see or land that fish...often before it is ready for us to get up close and personal.[/#0000ff]
