A Michigan family is mourning the death of a MarineCorps major and father of two. Major Kevin Nave, a veteran of the 1991 Persian Gulf War is the first Michigan native reported killed in the war with Iraq. Military officials told the wife of Major Kevin Nave that her 36 year-old husband died in combat. Nave was from Oakland County's White Lake Township. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. He and his wife lived there with their two children.

He was getting old and paunchy

telling stories of the past,

Of a war that he had fought in
and the deeds that he had done
In his exploits with his buddies;
they were heroes, everyone.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors,

for old Bob has passed away
And the world's a little poorer,
for a soldier died today.

No he won't be mourned by many,

When politicians leave this earth,

went to battle, but we know

Should you find yourself in danger

Would you really want some cop-out
with his ever waffling stand?

who has sworn to defend

He was just a common soldier

Friends, classmates and neighbors joined a local community in mourning the death of U.S. Marine Maj. Kevin Nave, 36, a White Lake Township native and the state's first casualty of the war in Iraq.

Nave reportedly died Wednesday, March 26 from injuries incurred when a Marine amphibious assault vehicle rolled over him in a foxhole. Department of Defense officials reported that the incident is being investigated, that Nave's unit was not under enemy attack at the time, and the death has been initially ruled as accidental. Nave and his unit were near the city of An Nasiriyah in south-central Iraq at the time.

According to published reports, Nave is survived by his wife Carrie, a 6-year-old son and a daughter who turned 5 on Thursday, March 27. Nave's wife and children were in Camp Pendleton, Calif., where Nave was stationed with the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Battalion of the 5th Marine Regiment.

In addition, Nave is survived by his mother, Anne; father, Reno; sister, Katie; and brothers Michael and Anthony. As of Monday, March 31, the family had declined to speak publicly of the death. A funeral service is expected to be held in Highland Township Saturday, April 5.

Nave graduated in 1985 from Waterford Kettering High School, where he started on the football team and participated on the varsity wrestling team, according to published reports. Flags were flown at half-staff at the school following the news reports.

After graduation, Nave reportedly attended the University of Michigan, where he obtained a degree in political science and completed the reserve officer's training program, from which he had obtained a scholarship. Nave attended the Marine officer's school, and after receiving his commission served during the Persian Gulf War. Relatives reported that Nave had intended to make the Marine Corps his career.

In the lakes area, those who knew Nave paid tribute to him last week. Nave had worked during high school and college at Anthony's Pizza & Party Shoppes in White Lake; a marquee sign was displayed there last week that read: "We will miss you Maj. Kevin Nave. Thank You."
