We headed north for the three day weekend. I am not going to post the name [ ] of the lake, cause again it cannot take the pressure.
Very HOT on Saturday, but had a nice storm move through Sunday that cooled it off nice (we won't alk about the 60 mile per hour wind that came in first, thank god we were not on the water)
[inline "Labor Day 027 450.jpg"]

A few things that were out of the ordinary that happened. First we got up there, and unloaded the truck. We had boats (Navigator II) oars, life jacket, whistle, flippers, waders, licenses, batteries, but forgot motors...bummber! But it was not bad at all. I love those boats and they move fantastic.

Second, the water is still very warm. 68 degrees at 30 feet so it took time to revive the fish (something I hope everyone is aware of this time of year)

Third thing. I fly fish and I was deep nymphing with a Prince Nymph at 19' down and a Chironomid at 15'. I hooked and landed TWO fish at once. I have hook two fish before on several occassions but never on this two different depth zone set up, so that was cool.

Forth thing. While on the water Sunday, the storm started to come in and we got rained on (no big deal). We headed for camp shore rowing and kicking. I kept hearing this "click-click" sound and looked back at my rods in the rod holders on the back of my boat to see if one came loose. They were fine, but my GLASS rod was making the noise. I reached back to grab it and got SHOCKED bad. Now that is scary right there, and I don't care who you are!

We caught A LOT of fish with a few in the 16 to 18" but more 20" to 23". This lake is trying to come back. I still miss the BIG fish this use to have.

That is interesting that it was your glass rod that was zinging. It usually the Graphite ones that do it. Nothing says "get off the water" like a graphite rod singing to you !!!!

Glad to hear you were off the water with no strike. That is a mighty pretty fish you have there. I guess it is time to start fishing Strawberry again. I hope to see ya up there. Maybe I will even dust off my long skinny stack and take it out for a drive.

Static in the air from the Storm that was moving in. The same static that causes lightening. I am not sure, but I bet the hair on my arms was standing up also.
I thought the same thing as Therapist, why the glass and not the graphite. The only reason I can come up with, is it was the one I was using so it was still wet.
Glass rods are the best for deep nymphing. They set the hook themself....plus the bend makes everyone stand up and notice. Even if it isn't a big fish...It looks like it.

I did try that when I went back into to edit my post.. but.. basically I was saying that the static was what I thought it was that caused the shock.. but since I have never tubed I was not 100% sure.. and..

.. I am glad you are okay.. I am sure it scared the beejezuss out of you when you sitting in a body of water and got a shock when you touched the pole...

Hey FG, great pics. I have heard from several folks that the very best fishing is right when an electric storm comes in. Sometimes it gets hard to time it just right because of obvious reasons, but I'm glad you got out of there safely.

[cool][#0000ff]EEEEEE-LECTRIFYING report. Oh look, see the lady with the standup hairdo and the sparks coming out her fingertips.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I think I know your venue. Begins with "D"? Great lake but it gets hammered...especially under the ice.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I too have fished a few times in the tube when the hair stood up on my arms and the rod hummed. Had one time when the line stayed in the air on a cast. Talk about a delicate presentation. I once had a bolt of lightning go right overhead and whack into a low hill just a short ways off the water. Too much excitement for me.[/#0000ff]

The closest I've ever been to a ZAP:

A few years back I was golfing and my buddy and I decided to stop by the latrine while a black cloud passed over us. Well, it started pouring down pretty good when a bolt came out of nowhere to strike a tree not 80 yards away. Needless to say, we got off the greens and didn't care about finishing up.

Another time when I was a kid, we were out fishing in a boat when the clouds starting rolling in. I have no idea why we didn't get to shore, but sure enough the lightning came down all around us and hit just a couple dozen yards away. Made the hair stand up and the air around us resonate.

The best day of brookie fishing I have ever had was at Henry's when I was too far out to get away from an electric storm. So like an idiot I kept fishing. I played the fish with my rod down near the water and used the tip to pop the flies off so I did not have to raise my rod. Casting was difficult but I just kicked it out and then drifted over the fish. Everytime I did raise my rod the air would crackle and scare the crud out of me.

Nice report there. I always love to hear such electrifying stories with happy endings.

I see that even the fish weren't afraid of you with your magic powers. I would have figured them for toast......or at least on a slice of toast.[cool]

Next time that you are out golfing in a T storm, hold your 1 iron high in the air for protection.[ ]

Not even God can hit a 1 iron![shocked][laugh][laugh][laugh]

tuben2, not to bounce my own thread, but we were talking about you at the camp. Knowing your Daddy, then seeing the picture of you in the Day Tripper, I had to ask Poky how big you are. That tube looks HUGE with you in it. And like I said, knowing your dad at the 6'+ mark. Pky said you must take after mom, cause you were around the 5'10" mark.
We all agreed however, that you are a MAD MAN for taking that thing out in the Ocean. Keep in mind, I had one and Poky still has his so we are both very familiar with them. LOL
