"Clock ticking on efforts to salvage a failing ecosystem"
#1
A couple of co-workers who know my addiction to fishing were asking me about this article in the Provo Herald. I didn't know anything about it, and looked it up. We all know that Utah Lake is in some serious trouble if things stay the same. As some of you know, I am just getting into fishing for the warmwater species. I am planning on making my home here in Utah Valley and want this lake to survive, even improve. Here is a link to two articles that we fisherfolk might want to look into more:

http://www.harktheherald.com/article.php?sid=79262&mode=thread&order=0

I need to educate myself some more on what I can do. If enough of us get together with other interested parties we might be able to do something about it. The first article implies that the farmers on the north drainage of Utah Lake will soon not be able to use the Lake for irrigation because of salinity problems. At first I thought, "good, what goes around comes around." Then I started wondering if the farmers can now be used as leverage to help the fishery. Politicians like to help the farmer.

I've sat on the sidelines long enough. Its time for me to get more involved so that my children can go "stick some fish" out of Utah Lake when they are older.

See you on the water!

So, whats the game plan going to be? Are you thinking of joining one of the existing organizations, or donating to the fish and game? The utah rivers council, sportsmen for fish and wildlife, rocky mountain anglers and probably a few others may be interested in getting involved with the issues if they arent already.

I'm not sure what yet, I just feel a pressure to do something. I will probably look at joining in on one of the existing groups to see what is happening. I wonder if the various organizations are getting together at all.

What groups are BFT folk working with????

See you on the water!

If you want to get involved and learn more about the problems Utah Lake has, go to the meeting. It's Wed.(4-16-03) at 7:00 at the Provo Library. Room 308. It will be the first meeting of the Utah Lake Restoration Project. This is a project that should concern everyone in Utah county and anyone living downstream of the lake. And if our taxes are going to pay for a 228 million dollar project, then it should concern everyone in the state. I'm planning on going to the meeting. I would love to see Utah Lake cleaner and deeper. More fishies for me.

Bob, if you don't mind, will you keep us posted on what is going on with Utah lake and what the meeting was about? I read something about Utah lake being a dead lake in 5 years if something isn't done soon. WH2
