Briggs & Stratton or Nissan?
#1
Getting ready to order a new 12' porta-bote and don't know which motor to get with it. I can get the Nissan 6hp for $1,145 or the B&S 5hp for $729-anyone know why such a difference in price-is the Nissan really that much better? Any advice is much appreciated

I don't know how the briggs boat motors are, however the construction company that I work for considers Briggs as throw aways. They don't last very long and are not worth repairing. We normally won't buy anything with briggs, unless there is no other option.

I've worked with alot of B&S motors and am a true believer in them. They are simple to work on and cheep to get parts for and with good maintenance they will last a long time. With todays technolgy you can do alot of upgrades to them to increase performance. I'm not real framiliar with nissan so I cant help you there. Are you buying new? if so then make sure of the warrante theres alot of used motors out there that have been time tested that are pretty good for a reasonable price.

another thing to consider is do you want a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke. the way the enviromentalists are going these 2 stroke engines will need to be up-graded to meet epa standards. you will gain a little weight with a 4 stroke but they do burn cleaner and quieter and would probibally last longer than a 2 stroke. Just my input D

[Tongue] I don't know, I might be a cheapskate but I think I would go with the B&S Motor. Just my opinion.

Go with the Nissan. I owned a Nissan for three years and they are well built, reliable motors. There is nothing cheap about their motor. The 25 HP I owned was just a jewel. The only thing I heard about the Nissans are they are noiser than say a Honda or Yamaha. Nissan is one of the largest corporations in the Japan. Briggs make good lawn mowers but outboards? Buy the Nissan.....JMHO

Sportsman's guide has that same Briggs & Stratton for a little over $600.00 and it has electric start. If you are a member you can get the engine for less than $600. The only reason I can think of that would make the Nissan cost that much more is if it were a 4 stroke and the Briggs & Stratton
were a 2 stroke. Like BLM said, Nissan makes a good motor. This B&S is the first I've heard of them making a boat motor but you never know. WH2

Thanks for the input. The Briggs and Stratton is a 4 stroke. How do I get into the Sportsman's guide?

You just type in < sportsmansguide.com>. I'll see if I can find the catalog that I saw it in and get the stock number. WH2

Before deciding on either one, I would make some phone calls around where you live and make certain that there are multiple service shops for that outboard. One fisherman told me that the closest repair for his outboard is Denver.

I gave sportmans guide a call and it was a 4 stroke and they had over 600 of them but have sold them all. For a price like that I guess it is not surprising. WH2
